I showed Koyaanisqatsi to my design classes today. They've been working on Gestalt principles and I think this film is a great and elaborate example of the power repetition on compositional unity.
They had a tough time with it, understandably.
We talked about it afterward. I asked first for adjectives to describe the movie. One of my best students in terms of ability, if not in productivity, barked out, "Bor-ing."
Well.
I asked them then, besides that, what. It got better from there. One student had some insights I was hoping somebody would have and then we got somewhere.
It's a strange thing starting a group discussion about something open-ended and its awesome, too, but man, I can really feel how new i am at this.
