Hugs
---------------------------------------------
Mother didn't want Sara answering the door, especially not since the problem with that college student when she was really little, but Sara liked the anticipation of it. Sometimes she played guessing games with herself, trying to predict who might be standing on the front steps. Besides, Mother and Father didn't always hear the doorbell when they were upstairs together, or arguing.
This time Sara guessed it was her brother -- he'd yelled at Mother after school and run off to the park, but that was a while ago so he was probably coming home to say sorry and get punished. He was probably hungry, too, since he'd missed dinner.
Just in case, though, she put the safety chain on before she turned the knob.
"Hi, Sara," Setsuna said, grinning past a bruised cheek and split lip. There was a cut over his right eye.
"Oniichan! What happened? Are you okay? Let me get bandaids!" Sara jerked the safety chain off and pulled her brother into the house by his shirt.
Then she noticed the other boy on the doorstep, standing slouched with his hands in his pockets and watching like he was laughing behind his eyes. He was kind of tall -- and he was older, maybe twelve or fourteen -- and he had a pair of glasses tucked into his shirt pocket. Sara wondered why he wasn't wearing them, and checked his eyes again.
"Hey! Do you have gaijin blood too? Your eyes are gray, like rainclouds."
The boy looked surprised for a second, and then he shrugged. "Yeah, my great-grandfather brought some fancy French lady back home as a wife. I'm Kira Sakuya -- I guess you're Setsuna's sister?"
"This is my little sister, Mudo Sara," Setsuna told him, prying Sara's hand off his shirt. "If you hurt her, I'll kill you."
He meant that literally, Sara knew; she grabbed his hand, squeezing tight to show that she was okay. "Let's go in and I'll clean off the blood, Oniichan." She looked at Kira, uncertain. "Um."
Her brother took the choice out of her hands. "Come in, Kira-sempai. If you want to be friends, you have to put up with Sara too. I was in a fight, and he threw firecrackers to break it up -- his fingers might be burned," he added to Sara.
"You helped Oniichan?" Sara asked. "Really truly?" She didn't like fighting, but...
"Yeah. It's no big deal," Kira said, still hovering in the doorway like he wasn't sure he was allowed to come inside.
"Yes it is," Sara said firmly. "Nobody's ever helped Oniichan before -- all the boys say the fights are his fault, because he finishes them and they're ashamed that Oniichan always wins. But he's not the one who starts them! The teachers don't believe me or Oniichan, because everyone else lies, so if you helped him, it's a very big deal. Thank you." She reached forward and gave her brother's new friend a hug. He twitched, like he wasn't used to being touched, and then patted her shoulder awkwardly.
"Sara!" Setsuna protested. "Leave Kira-sempai alone. And don't tell him stuff like that; it's embarrassing."
"I don't mind. And I think you two sound cute," Kira said, laughing behind his eyes again. "Brother and sister against the world -- when nobody believed them, they believed in each other! An inspiring true story! Read the manga, watch the movie."
Setsuna flushed scarlet, but he didn't yell or run or throw a punch. "Whatever. Come on, someone help me clean up before Mother sees me and gets even more angry."
"Oh! Right." Sara grabbed her brother's shirt again and hauled him toward the bathroom. "Come on, Kira-san! I want to check your hand too."
Kira shut the door behind himself and followed, whistling off-key.
