Fever Dreams

It was too hot, his flesh sweltering, and sweat pouring off his face in rivulets. He could distantly feel the cool pressure against his forehead, but all that was too far away. Slowly, slowly all thoughts faded into a deep darkness.

When he awoke, Kakashi slowly sat up in his bed, all remnants of his horrible fever faded from his weary body. The bed in which he slept wasn’t drenched in his sweat-oddly enough-and the room looked a lot different. If was as if it had become brighter somehow, and yet it was still his room, sure enough.

Suddenly, a loud banging from the kitchen. The shinobi in Kakashi quickly reacted and reached for the kunai that was hidden underneath his shirt.

The only problem being . . . it wasn’t there. He groped for it in vain for several seconds before deciding that it had disappeared, along with the sheath that had held it. Obviously, someone was playing with his head.

“Hey, ‘Kashi, are ya awake yet?” a bright and overly loud voice screeched through his thoughts.

There was only one person that could be that infernally loud and call him ‘Kashi . . .

He ran out of the room, the wooden boards underneath his exposed feet cold on his skin, but he didn’t care as he rushed down the too-long hallway leading into the kitchen, from which he was sure he’d heard the banging.

And there he stood, his hands elbow deep in water, those damn goggles hanging from his neck, jostling against him noisily whenever he moved, which he did often. As Kakashi stood in the doorway, eyes wide as saucers, this man didn’t even turn to face him. “Man, what a scare you gave us. Call Rin and tell her you’re feelin’ better, will you?”

Kakashi didn’t move, couldn’t move. Not with him standing in front of him, as if not a thing had ever happened to him, and never would.

Before he could stop himself, he was walking towards the other man, his head in a daze and tears being brushed off. Obito let out a low grunt as Kakashi’s arms came around his middle, and he buried his face into the back of his neck.

“Hey! What the hell’s this for, eh?” Kakashi could make out the slight bit of amusement the dark haired man was getting out of this extra attention, though, and didn’t answer or pull back. Instead he closed his eyes and let the familiar scent of earth fill his nostrils. Even with the discomfort of having Obito’s cold, wet hands over his, the fact that he was here and not buried under six feet of dirt would have made him put up with anything.

“Hey, you’re, erm, mostly well, right?” Obito asked, sounding a little unsure, with some underlying feeling.

Kakashi lifted his face slightly, the indescribably hazy feeling of shock now beginning to fade, and the solid feeling of Obito against him feeling realer than ever. “I . . . guess,” Kakashi managed, realizing with a shock his voice felt raspy and raw, as if he’d been screaming in his sleep.

Then reality hit in the face. In the real world Obito was dead and Rin was gone and disappeared, and he . . . he lived alone.

This was a dream. A wonderful dream, but a dream nonetheless.

And he woke up.
