So last night was weird. This was possibly due to taking one of the absurdly strong painkillers that you can just get over the counter here. This one was panadol and codeine and some sort of "calmative" and while it really did kill the pain I was in, it also made me full of cotton-mouth, sleepy, and very very sedated. However! It's nice to know that if you have a migraine you can buy 24 extremely strong painkillers for $6, take two, and pass out for 10 hours, waking up pain-free. WARNING: THIS IS NOT SO GOOD IF YOU ARE GOING TO A CONCERT.
I'd been wanting to see Wagons since I checked out a couple of their songs while investigating Calexico's support bands. (One always needs to know if you should bother to show up for the support act.) They were excellent alt-country and their singer sounded like a cross between Nick Cave and Tom Waits. GOOD TIMES. I will check them out further but they are a band that you would love to see while drinking beer in a pub.
Next up was Depardo - one of the lead singers for Calexico doing solo spanish-style music. I couldn't understand a word he sang but it was beautiful and liquid and hey, I like opera so it's not like this factor hinders my enjoyment.
Calexico started off a little country, and sweet, and ended up rocking rocking ROCKING out the place. Sometimes a bit more country, sometimes much more mariachi-style, it was music that made you dance.
And to circle back to the first bit, I would have enjoyed it just that bit more if my sedated quietness hadn't been misinterpreted by Heather and her sulking at me for no apparent reason for most of the gig. Stoned Jo was baffled and confused as to what was going on and feeling like I needed to apologise for god knows what. Near the end Doug told me that he got cranky watching me be manipulated, which was actually a bit of a relief because it made me think I wasn't just imagining things, and this helped me email Heather today asking WTF? Don't pull that shit.
At any rates, Calexico are lovely. You should go see them.
