Our twenty year-old coffee-maker gave up the ghost this morning. We inherited it two years ago from a neighbour who moved and have been using it without incident up to a few weeks ago, when it started to jam up. This morning, the heating element stopped working entirely.
I disassembled this wonderful piece of Made-in-Canada goodness to find that it comprised an on/off switch wired to the power cord, a heating element wired to the the switch and a rubber tube assembly that snaked up to the water reservoir. It is a simple elegant design that does exactly what needs to be done without any extra bells and whistles. I disconnected and reconnected all the wiring in the hopes of finding/repairing a loose connection, but my actions were of no avail: it seems that the heating coil has burnt out.
The easy solution is to go to Home Depot or Costco and buy a hunk of Made-in-China junk that is designed to break within a year but the ethical solution would be to find a repair shop that would replace the heating coil.
Does anyone know of any such shops in Toronto. I'm not a huge fan of this coffee maker but at the same time, I know that I'm not going to get anything better by purchasing something new.
