The Don Valley Brickworks comprised an abandoned industrial site that has been a blot on the Toronto landscape for decades. Other than serving as an inspiration for intrepid photographers who steal into the abandoned factory to take pictures of the decay, the area has had little to offer citizens. But all that is changing. Thanks to the efforts of various organzations, the surroundings have been made into an ecological park wherein various species of wild flora and fauna have, with some human intervention, taken over again, providing an oasis within the urban and industrial landscapes. There is also a weekly farmer's market onsite where people can produre various organic produce, including fair trade cacao beans with which to concoct homemade chocolate.
John and I spent part of the afternoon there and we marvelled at the various species of flowers, trees and birds that have made this part of the valley at home. The locale provides a wondrous serenity which is perhaps enhanced by the sound of traffic on the nearby parkway. The background noise is perhaps a reminder that we need to have such places within an urban environment and that, no matter what our level of technology, we are in essence a part of nature and not above it.
