my First iMovie

I made my first movie today... a forty-second trailer for a non-existent film using digital photographs of Barbie and Ken dolls in compromising positions. It was a lot of fun and once I got the hang of it, iMovie turned out to be a great tool. Of course, I didn't futz around with time code or any of the stuff that pros use but the experience did allow me to get a bit of a feel for the creative process involved in yet another medium. And I didn't see the time pass. It is now nearly two a.m. and I started working on this around seven (including the time to take pictures).

I thought about posting to YouTube but I don't want to bother with a copyright battle (Mattel protects Barbie fiendishly and although there are some rather demented Barbie-based videos out there, they tend to disappear very quickly). I do wonder if this falls into fair use of their copyrights since it is a parody. But for sure, I know that using the Who's Won't Get Fooled Again is not fair use.

This has given me the taste to go on with the short film I've been thinking of doing since last summer but I haven't figured out if I'll use stills for that or whether I'll spring for a DV camera to do some parts of it. I looked at renting a pro camera and it's just too expensive and renting a consumer camera for unconsecutive days can add up to the price of a new camera very quickly, so it's something I'll have to ponder.

As for now, I'd better get some sleep. I'm exhausted but I feel great.
