That's only because humans are by nature afraid of accepting the truth.

But it wasn't just them. Humans, youkai... they were all afraid.

It's all the same. Fear of the truth. Human, youkai, demon, or saint, they all have truths they try to ignore by keeping them to themselves and pretending they don't exist; if another person learns of their truth, then they would be forced to acknowledge it as real.

Their fear comes from their own weakness.
