Gotham 1x06 "Spirit of the Goat"

Oct 28, 2014 02:12

Thematically, this was a bit of a retread from 1x03 "The Balloonman", now with bonus murdered women. It was not particularly clear to me why the hypnotherapist thought killing those women (in a picturesque manner, by someone masquerading as a goat demon) was "therapy for Gotham", but I was sleepy when I watched, so I may have drifted off during the explanation.

The general sense I got is that the episodic plot was there to fill time while character-related plots bubbled over. It gave time for Montoya & Allen to get their arrest warrant, time for Barbara to go to Renee, time for Jim to find out more about Harvey, and time for Penguin to have a bath. Because baths are important. During the bath we learn that Penguin actually does think of Gordon as a friend. Someone who can be used until he can't is Penguin's idea of friendship. When he appeared at the end of the episode (this is getting to be a pattern with him), I jumped. He's not interested in taking things slow, is he!

I'm all set for the inter-police shenanigans, too. I want to see more of what Ellis is made of. We now know in more detail that Bullock's apathy and brutality are inspired by anger, fear, and helplessness. So far all we know about Ellis (correct me if I'm wrong) is that she doesn't specifically give a shit about her officers' behavior, and prefers wrapping things up over seeking justice, in part because she doesn't want attention from City Hall. That is, we have a handle on how Bullock is going to be redeemed, but not on how Ellis is. And I assume from the comics that she will be.

Mooney and the other mobsters were conspicuously absent from this episode. I suppose that's another plot line that's being given off-screen time to come to a head, because whatever Penguin is up to now, it's going to make a big splash. (Get it? Ugh, sorry.) Mooney's trademark of fabulous large earrings was co-opted by the hypnotherapist, for some reason.

In other costume news... Are Gothamites all terrible at cosplay? A goat costume and a bat costume should not look similar! For a city of colorful individuals, you'd think they'd know better. But I suppose Catwoman doesn't dress much like a cat either. The city itself continues to be colorful and illustrative, which is exactly what I want from Bat-media. In the final showdown with the hypnotherapist they gradually pulled out to do more and more of a Vertigo effect. (I was surprised and relieved when nobody fell down the stairwell.)

The Nygma segment reminded me why I am watching Gotham and not watching The Flash. The Flash thinks behavior like Nygma's nasty highhandedness with Kringle is adorable as long as you're a skinny, white nerd boy, while Gotham thinks Nygma is a supervillain-to-be. (Yes, it's possible that Gotham thinks this is a sympathetic moment for Nygma, but LALALALA I'M NOT LISTENING.)
