Day 2: Name the fandoms you've vidded in, how many vids you've made in each fandom, and whether you plan to vid in them again.
First was Firefly, with 2 vids, one of which I don't even have any more. I don't have anything left to say about Firefly; certainly nothing that hasn't been said a thousand times before. An insanely popular fourteen-episode show's clips get exhausted very fast. Honestly I'm not sure I can go back to Firefly fandom, period. It was great while it lasted, but I've had enough for a lifetime.
Then came Buffy. I started a million Buffy vids but only finished three. There remain two Buffy vids I've been meaning to make since time immemorial, and dammit, I'm going to make them one day. I get other ideas for Buffy vids every now and then; first fandoms never quite leave you. People needing Buffy vid ideas? Contact me.
In the five or six years in which I was having difficulty completing vids, I made two Smallville vidlets about Lana Lang. I made them because (I thought) I didn't have that many feelings about the character and thus it would be a low anxiety subject... I've never had a character go from least favorite to obsession the way she did over the course of one episode. There is an epic broken Lana vid in me that keeps threatening to come out. Last night I put some more clips down, despite the fact that it is deep Festivids season and I do not have the time or space to be working on this right now. I also have a humorous more than half-done WIP from those days that it would not take much work to finish.
After the vid drought, the first fandom I finished a vid for was The Man from UNCLE -- specifically, for the stylish and clever black and white first season. I finished a Napoleon vidlet and then a vid of all the innocents, and I'm highly pleased with the results. Because my interest in the show evaporated with the production changes after the first season, I have at most one more Man from UNCLE vidlet to make -- Solo/Satine OTP!
Movies I've vidded once each: Bringing Up Baby, Singin' in the Rain, The Cat People/Curse of the Cat People, The Black Cat, and The Wicker Man (2005) for Festivids; Nosferatu and It for myself. I made these vids because I wanted to vid these movies, not because I had a specific thing to say about any of them. In the case of Nosferatu and The Black Cat, my vids didn't even focus on what it is I love about the movies. Nosferatu is creepy and tragic and not actually about a love triangle, no matter what my vid implied. The fascination of The Black Cat is the tragedy of Lugosi's twisted but not completely evil character being driven over the edge by a psychopath who killed his family, which is not exactly the tack my vid of this movie to funk took. I made the (Curse of) The Cat People vid for the intellectual challenge of unifying two movies that have less to do with each other than you would think. The end result drifts in and out of coherence, but I now know whether I am capable of unifying them (the answer: almost!), and I got to spend a lot of time with two lovely and giving black and white movies. I did not make two Nic Cage Wicker Man vids. That is a vile slander.
Last but not least, I've vidded DS9. I had great fun making my Jadzia vid (
now remastered and improved), and I have two or three other DS9 vids in progress -- a Prophets vid, a Rom vid, and possibly an Odo/Quark vid. In the course of taking notes for my Rom vid I also have clip notes for all of Nog and Leeta's appearances, so if I ever stumble across songs for them (or anyone else wants the notes) those are vids to be made.
Let us pretend those are all the sources I've ever vidded. Let us pretend there are not easily thirty other sources with WIPs on my harddrive.
Day 1: How did you first get into vidding, and what was the first fandom you vidded? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?
Day 2: Name the fandoms you've vidded in, how many vids you've made in each fandom, and whether you plan to vid in them again.
Day 3: For each of the fandoms from day two, what were your favorite characters to vid?
Day 4: Do you have a "muse" character or fandom that speaks to you more than others? Who are they, and why did that character/fandom became your muse?
Day 5: If you have ever had a character try to push their way into a vid, what did you do about it?
Day 6: When you vid, do you like vidding a certain kind of male or female archetype? (Credit to Dualbunny for that one!)
Day 7: Have you ever had a vid (of yours) change your opinion of a character?
Day 8: Have you vidded with original source? If so, why did you use original source?
Day 9: Pairings: For each of the fandoms from day two, what are your favorite pairings to vid?
Day 10: Pairings: Have you ever tried to vid a pairing you liked, but found you couldn't, or a pairing you didn't like, and found you could?
Day 11: Genre: do you prefer making certain genres of vid? What kind do you tend to vid the most?
Day 12: Have you ever attempted an "adaptation" vid of a favorite media source but set in a different fandom? (I.e., attempted to bring the 'feel' or 'mood' of one source to a different fandom, like the zombie Mary Poppins vid.)
Day 13: Do you prefer canon or fanon when you vid (canon shots vs. using shots out of context; AU vs. canon)? Has vidding for a fandom changed the way you see some or even all of the original source material?
Day 14: Ratings: how high are you comfortable with going? Have you ever vidded higher than you're comfortable with? If you're comfortable with NC-17, have you ever been shocked by finding that the vid you're making is G-rated instead?
Day 15: Warnings: What do you feel it most important to warn for, and what's the strangest thing you've warned for in a vid?
Day 16: Summaries: Do you like them or hate them? How do you come up with them, if you use them?
Day 17: Titles: Do you try to use something different than the song? Why or why not?
Day 18: Where do you get the most inspiration for your vids from?
Day 19: When you have vid ideas, do you sit down and start vidding right away, or do you write down the idea for further exploration later?
Day 20: Do you ever get ideas inspired from other people's stories, vids, or art in the same fandom?
Day 21: Sequels: Have you ever created a sequel to a vid you made, and if so, why, and if not, how do you feel about sequels?
Day 22: Have you ever participated in a fest or a Big Bang? If so, write about your favorite experience in relation to one. If not, are there any you've thought about doing? And if not, why not?
Day 23: When you post, where do you post to? Just your journal? Just an archive? Your own personal site?
Day 24: Betaing: How many betas do you like to use to make sure there aren't any major flaws in your vid? Do you have a Beta horror story or dream story?
Day 25: Music: Do you listen to music while you rip source? Do you listen to your vid song immediately before vidding, months before vidding, or just while working on it?
Day 26: What is the oddest (or most fun) thing you've had to do for a vid?
Day 27: Where is your favorite place to vid? Where would be your perfect vidding spot?
Day 28: Have you ever collaborated with anyone else, whether vidding together, or having an artist or writer work on a piece about your vid?
Day 29: What is your current project or projects?
Day 30: Do you have a favorite vid you've made? What makes it your favorite? And don't forget to give us a link!
