The other day I was chagrined to realize I had 140 vids on my computer waiting for feedback. I promptly left feedback for several, but since then I downloaded some more so I could close tabs that have been sitting open in my browser for a month, and the number still waiting for feedback is now up at 150. *sigh* I could get through them all in a month if I left feedback for five a day, but I'm unlikely to sustain that rate in between working full time, taking a class, vidding my own projects, and watching the Man from U.N.C.L.E., which is a damn fine show.
It's fairly similar to its contemporary, The Avengers. Each episode, the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement assigns an agent to combat a nefarious plot, usually having to do with blowing up the world or taking over a small country through peculiarly circuitous (and sometimes quasi- science fictional) means. The danger is always taken seriously, but the show as a whole knows it's being kind of silly, and is enjoying it.
Our hero is Napoleon Solo, secret agent and, most importantly, ladies' man extraordinaire. This isn't played in a James Bond, Barney Stinson, macho conquest sort of way. He really loves women, and they really love him. At least two female agents of Thrush (an evil counterpart of U.N.C.L.E. dedicated to world domination and assorted villainy) agree that going on a date with Napoleon is an as good or better time than trying to kill him. Napoleon is played by Robert Vaughn, who has a million facial expressions, all of them able to tell small stories, all of them able to charm me and crack me up simultaneously. It's that kind of a show.
Co-stars are David McCallum as Illya Kuryakin and Leo G. Carroll as Alexander Waverly. Illya is Napoleon's partner and subordinate, a Russian with a delightfully dry sense of humor and an odd method of charming ladies (at least one or two) by appearing completely disinterested in them. Due to his great popularity with female fans, he rises to co-lead by the second season, but in the first season he is off-screen most of the time, in some episodes not appearing at all. Mr. Waverly is their elderly English boss, who appears in fewer first season episodes as Illya does, and has an even more limited role, which is to frown thoughtfully and send them out on missions. Much more prominent in each episode are the guest stars.
Each episode, in order to carry out his mission, Napoleon enlists an innocent civilian, or finds one unintentionally involved in the proceedings. This innocent is usually a young woman (married or single) who has up to this point had insufficient excitement in her life. Sometimes he enlists young couples, and once, irritatingly, a kid, but usually there is a woman to kiss Napoleon by the end of the episode. The guest stars (both innocents and villains) are, by and large, a marvelous bunch, to the point where some of my favorite episodes of the season have had little or no of Napoleon's supposed co-stars, just one-off foils for Napoleon who break my heart by never returning.
I might post more about the show later, but first I must post my vid! It's the first vid I've finished in, oh, four years, so I'm really pleased with it, even if it's no work of genius, because it's done. I made a first draft in a sudden burst of inspiration earlier this month, and then spent the rest of the month editing it in my not-so-copious spare time, so that's a pretty reasonable completion rate, I think. It's one minute long and silly enough to make me smile... Is that insufficient recommendation? *prods people to watch*
