2. Bowie can't sing, now or since (if you don't believe me, check out his histrionics on "Lodger" or "Scary Monsters"), and he has the emotional heft of a butter knife. At least he knows it. My all-time favorite Bowie lyric is, "It's not the side effects of the cocaine/I'm thinking that it must be love." Aw! Ain't he sweet!?
3. I write narrative fiction, mostly short stories. I've written a novella and a couple of novels.
4. A recenet NYT Magazine profile notwithstanding, Alice Munro doesn't get cited much by writers. If there was a contemporary whose work I anticipate, and whose sprawling tales of girls footloose and fancy free in Canada has inspired slavish, unsuccessful imitations from yours truly, it's Munro.
5. I'm a big Psychedelic Furs enthusiast, a sadly underrated post-punk combo from the '80s who made two excellent albums (Talk Talk Talk, Forever Now) and loads of great singles. Did I mention the Go-Betweens?
