Nate and I went to Stumptown on Friday to have a sit and do some work. While we were there, I chatted with the barrista about how long coffee lasts, and he told us some surprising things:
(1) Coffee is best stored at room temperature. Temperature changes (like going into the fridge or freezer) is bad for the oils of the bean, and thus hurts the taste of the coffee. If you really want to go all out, put the beans in a sealable container.
(2) Beans last for a month before a professional coffee taster would even be able to notice a difference. So the average connoisseur can keep coffee (at room temp) for weeks without a problem.
Lately we've been drinking (as per recommendation of said barrista) a mix of decaf house and caffeinated Kenya coffees. It's pretty tasty. I really like the Kenya (although it tastes much lighter than I tend to like). It's good for autumn for some reason.
Unfortunately, I haven't really been drinking much coffee myself, because I've been wanting to have it black, and our burr grinder keeps burning the coffee.
