Gogol Bordello and Gypsy music

One of my friends brought to my attention this band called Gogol Bordello, who plays gypsy punk. The term gypsy punk sounds weird and kind of hilarious to me, but after listening to them I kinda liked it (okay, I'll be honest, I did like it). This song has a catch to it, I just can't get it out of my head. (Not that I want to. At least not yet. I'm sure I'll get bored with it after a while though.)

I can't really explain it. Maybe because the Hungarian Gypsy music is part of our folklore and culture, and it's the complete opposite of gypsy punk and I'm just not used to it? For us Hungarians the ultimate merry making is to listen, sing and dance to Hungarian folk songs. (Yes, we don't just have fun, we make merry and cry too while we making it. I know it sounds weird but that's us for ya. We even have a saying about it, which I'm not going to translate.) There are people who would deny this, but trust me, as soon as they hear it they are up and dancing. Everybody has a song that is closest to their hearts, mostly something sad and about love, hence the crying while making merry thing.

This is how it sounds when 100 Gypsies play the Hungarian "csardas". The footage is probably 25-30 years old. The Budapest Gypsy Symphony Orchestra.
