I fall in love

Those quiet alone moments with Jonghyun were Key’s favorite time of the day. Stationed in the kitchen, Key eyes targeted Jonghyun’s lounging body in the living room; staring for the thousandth time that hour. Effortlessly, Jonghyun takes Key’s breath away. Like now the singer sprawled across the large couch meters away, head lazily bobbing back and forth to the music blaring from the headphones plugged inside the jack of his new itouch. Key gawked at the plump lips mouthing the song’s lyrics, so soft and kissable. How he wished that those pair of lips to meet his just once. A pure master piece from head to toe, a master piece Key could only love from a distance; looking but never able to touch. Sure he and Jonghyun messed around with each other during their schedules, but that’s just fan service. Just something for the millions of fan girls loving Shinee to swoon over. It wasn’t like Key hadn’t thought of ways to confess to Jonghyun before.

Maybe a rose and a note depicting his feelings would work? Nah too corny. A kiss of passion? Too forceful. Each idea would never convey the emotions Jonghyun stirred up inside of Key. Frustrated, Key screamed at the oblivious body on the couch, upset at the lack of answers he needed.

“How could you be so stupid,” Key yelled, fighting back growing tears. “Can‘t you see how much I love you? Everything you do fills me with happiness, your smile makes my days and nights shine. Your laugh too contagious not to catch. And yet you don’t notice me, my love lays invisible to your heart. I love you and you‘ll never know.” The back of Key’s extra big sweatshirt swiped the rapper’s clear of falling teardrops, muffling the sniffles that came along with them.

Key unknowingly wept at the one-side he keeps bottled inside his heart too focused on his own problem to register the still frame of the boy in the living room, frozen with surprise. A secret of one was now known by two, for Jonghyun heard every word spilled in Key’s confession.

Jonghyun’s feet paced the length of the bedroom’s hardwood floor. Each step pounding to the floor heavy in thought over the one person Jonghyun wished he could forget about. Flickers of Key filled the vocalist’s mind. Pictures of high angled cheek bones drifting skyward to soft concave orbs of rich chocolate. Jonghyun loves the way Key’s eyes sparked to life when he laughed, the smile gracing his features stunned the older boy breathless. Dangerous hips seduced Jonghyun to the breaking point, swaying menacingly to intoxicate its prey.

Like a charmed snake Jonghyun followed each movement falling deeper into the diva’s spell. Key’s lips delivered the final blow, drawing the prey to tumbling levels. The past week changed any intentions Jonghyun had for those lips and the boy who owned them. For the last week those lips played the vocal of Jonghyun’s attention, opening and closing to expel words and laughter. A tongue running across the smooth surface of the top’s pair taunted any self- control Jonghyun contained. He longed to capture Key’s plump lips with his own but these were secrets only Jonghyun knew. Secrets that he hated.

Nothing made sense anymore. Key is his best friend, his guy best friend. Best friends don’t just go around wanting to kiss each other senseless. Do they ? Key loves him, the younger admitted so that afternoon last week. Was it true? Did Jonghyun feel the same way? He didn’t know. Everything changed with Key’s confession and now Jonghyun’s brain was so scattered it couldn’t tell up from down.

Up and down.

Lately, every move Key made felt like a being roller coaster ride. An emotional coaster conducted by Jonghyun’s unsteady craziness. Just when Key thought he and his best friend were closer than ever, close enough to be more than best friends, Jonghyun yanks on his heart sending it flaring on a steep slope down. Key’s lucky enough to hear one word from Jonghyun, though the word reeks of caustic and sardonic irony, the love struck boy enjoys the word none the less.

The first day everyone thought the second eldest member of the group was just grumpy, irritable by the deviancy of sleep received. But as that one day morphed into a horrible week, nothing the group did snapped Jonghyun back to his normal self. Key was Shinee’s last hope to curing Jonghyun from his abhorrent attitude.

Key’s knuckles rasped gently against Jonghyun’s door (calling his best friend to answer), his foot tapping impatiently as he waited for entrance.

“Go away,” Jonghyun grumbled from behind the door.

As soon as the demand for Key to leave left Jonghyun’s mouth, the younger instinctively found himself reaching for the door‘s knob. It was natural for Key to disregard any command his best friend gave and the demand Jonghyun had just given was just the same as the others the singer had given before. The soft click of the door shutting announced Key’s entrance to Jonghyun, who was pacing. The older stopped his troubled paces, glancing over his shoulder to observe the disturbing party. Taking Jonghyun’s curtail glimpse as an acknowledgement of his presence, Key stepped closer to the center of the room.

“Jong what‘s wrong? Why have you been acting so strange this week?” Key asked, the worry evident in his voice.

“Nothing‘s wrong. Now go away.” Jonghyun turned his back to Key, afraid that his eyes would ruin the careful lies he had constructed.

Still turned away, Jonghyun could hear Key step closer until the younger stood directly behind him.
“Please Jong talk to me,” Key begged, bringing his hand to rest on Jonghyun’s shoulder. The sudden touch of Key

“GET OFF OF ME!” Jonghyun jumped back and in his frenzied state of mind shoved Key harshly. Caught off balance, Key tumbled backwards his backend meeting the floor in a brutal impact. Tears swelled in the dancer’s eyes as he stared up at Jonghyun in a frightened amazement. Quick seconds of silence dragged by like years without hope. No one moved. No one spoke.

Jonghyun’s arms still rested in the end position of pushing Key: his elbows were bent slightly back in the wavering pose between fully extended and withdrawn, his hands tense with panic, each finger spread widely apart from the other. Shock plastered itself on Jonghyun’s face as the singer stared at the after effects of his actions. Key was on the ground because he shoved him. Key was crying because he shoved him. Key hated him because he shoved him. Fear had done this to Jonghyun, no love had done this to Jonghyun.

“Key I-” Jonghyun stepped forward to help Key up but the younger was up and running out the door before he had a chance.

This is a dream gone terribly wrong. I didn’t do that. I didn’t push Key away. Please let it be a dream.

The front door slammed, waking Jonghyun from his naïve prayer. Jonghyun’s screw-up was big and now needed to be fixed. The front door slammed again.

Stopping to catch his breath, Jonghyun could see a thin body shivering on a wooden park bench. A small smile glowed on Jonghun’s face, he stared at the boy sitting meters.

“Here, wear this.” Key looked up to see a worn jacket thrust in his face. The jacket was a present from Jonghyun’s noona to celebrate his acceptance into Shinee and the singer never allowed anyone to touch more or less wear his jacket. But Key was special to him and an exception to the rule.

“No thanks,” Key replied plainly resuming the watch of snowflakes flurrying onto his shoes.

“I wasn’t asking.” Gripping Key’s arm Jonghyun slipped the jacket on to cover the other’s freezing body. Knowing the importance of the jacket made Key’s refusal even harder but secretly he was thankful to have the exhausted material warm his body and to have Jonghyun caring about him once again.

“I‘m sorry,” Jonghyun whispered into the night’s dark sky; thumbs twiddling with nervousness. Key scoffed at the apology, arms crossing in annoyance. The softness in his voice evaporating to raw anger.

“Sorry? That’s it, your sorry? Sorry doesn’t change the hell week I endured. In case you‘ve forgotten there‘s only one high- maintenance diva in Shinee and honey it ain’t you. Pssh, sorry my ass. I‘m leaving.” Key stood to make his dramatic exit, taking a step before a hand locked around his wrist to keep him in place. Jonghyun’s strength outweighed the diva’s, the singer manipulating Key’s arm to return the younger boy back to this seat on the bench. Unwilling Key planted himself next to Jonghyun, hating the enjoyment electrifying through his body caused by the slightest touch of the other’s hand holding his. Key tugged his hand roughly in an attempt to gain freedom of his hand again but Jonghyun held tight afraid that Key would try to walk away again.

His fingers traced the swirling patterns of the trapped hand, raising it up to his heart. Jonghyun fumbled for words, his mind and emotions in a frenzy. “Key… I- I-I….”

“You what!” Key snapped, sending Jonghyun a nasty glare.

“I-I-….” Actions speak louder then words and at this moment an action spoke louder than any words Jonghyun could say. Key melted into the surprising kiss, Jonghyun’s lips feeding an addicting flavor. Light puffs of panting breaths clouded out as the two pulled apart for much needed air.

“Key I love you too.”
