“Here ,” I said, holding a lopsided cake, sloppily iced and decorated out to your face. Excitement filled me like a young child showing his mother their new discovery. I couldn’t wait to see the reaction on your face. A small smiled leaked from your lips and I felt my heart flutter with delight.
I braced myself for back-breaking hugs of gratitude and bruised lips from fierce kisses but they never came. Your smile quickly turning into a scowl of disappointment, upset of each flaw presented.
Criticism of “It‘s too sweet” and “Ugh you should have used wheat flour instead,” pierced my deteriorating heart. Deep wounds gashed by dissatisfaction. Each word spoken seeped in my veins like venom, slowly numbing my entire body. I fought back tears and plastered a sunny smile for you. Creating the illusion that everything was okay as all joy and prior happiness drained away. Leaving me cold and alone.
A lump in the back of the throat threatened to destroy the false barricade formed. My breaths came in gasps, my lungs collapsing from your comments of seeking perfection. Something I am never ever to give you. Always making mistakes like a child.
And just like that you’re gone, stating that you need to be somewhere else. Casting away my home-made gift along with my feelings with a flick of the wrist
