Summer Reading Round-Up

Sep 03, 2012 10:23

I'm not actually done with all my "summer reading" yet, but here's the list.

(not in order, except of when I added it to goodreads).

1. Zero History, William Gibson
2. Super Sad True Love Story, Gary Shteyngart
3. An Artist of the Floating World, Kazuo Ishiguro
4. Zone One, Colson Whitehead
5. The Patrick Melrose Novels, Edward St Aubyn
6. Direct Action: An Ethnography, David Graeber
7. Debt: The First 5000 Years, David Graeber
8. The Coldest Winter, Paula Fox
9. Desperate Characters, Paula Fox
10. Borrowed Finery, Paula Fox
11. Just Kids, Patti Smith
12. Outlaws of the Marsh, Vol. 1, Shi Nai'an
13. Zoo City, Lauren Beukes
14. How to Suppress Women's Writing, Joanna Russ

Still to-read, but originally marked for summer.

The Plum in the Golden Vase, Vol 1: The Gathering, Lanling Xiaoxiao Sheng
At Last, Edward St Aubyn

It would be hard to pick a favorite, but The Patrick Melrose Novels were near perfection, as was Desperate Characters. And I always really enjoy William Gibson. Outlaws of the Marsh reminded me of what I don't like about Chinese heroic fiction. David Graeber is intellectually stimulating and very good at narrative and describing his thoughts and reactions but falls apart when he gets into stating formal theory.

Also, I just love Colson Whitehead.
