... I'll just spam you with a LOT of personal.
1. May I just say that the semester's rounding out pretty excellently. Sure I'm lagging on some homework, but hey. This semester is not nearly as d00my as the last one. I'll be fine.
2. In a very Zen mood these days. You know the episode of That '70s Show where Hyde teaches Jackie how to be Zen? Just like that.
3. I'm very likely going to law school once I graduate. Marquette has a joint-degree program so I could get an MA or the like in history or possibly sociopolitical philosophy. I just cannot think of something I would rather do than law, at this point. I really have never been able to.
4. Three more signatures on this sheet sitting next to me and I'll be safely nominated for Student Body Senator for Mount Mary Student Government. No promises but there are never any promises about anything, right? Doesn't stop us from going for it.
5. I might be getting into competitive singing again. We'll see. More on that mess later.
So this arrived in my campus mailbox.
Dear Kate,
The philosophy department at Mount Mary College has recently discovered that the John Carmichael Award for Excellence in Philosophy is still open for the current (2006-2007) academic year. The department has nominated and selected you for this award, which recognizes a student who exhibits the philosophical spirit and excellence of the late John Carmichael, former professor of philosophy at Mount Mary College. The award will be announced at the Spring Awards Assembly, May 1st at noon. We encourage you to attend in order to receive your certificate of award in the presence of the greater college community. You may invite friends or family to this event.
The amount of this award is 500$ towards your tuition for the 2006-2007 academic year. If you have not paid your tuition in full at this time, the money will go directly into your account. If you have paid your tuition in full, you will receive a letter from the financial aid office indicating that you may choose to either accept a 500$ refund or to apply the money towards the 2007-2008 academic year's tuition. If you have any questions regarding the logistics of this matter, please contact Irene in the financial aid office after you have received your new statement of award from her. (You should receive this letter in the next few weeks.)
Congratulations,
Dr. Jennifer Hockenberry
Chair of the philosophy department.
Well I'm just tickled pink about this. Possibly too much so. But one philosophy student a year gets this and this year it's ME. Ahaha. (Although I find it funny that they only realized they hadn't given it out until now.)
Interview meme questions from
misentropic:
1) What do you imagine your life being like in ten years?
Well, in two years I'll graduate from Mount Mary... three years after that, one would hope, I'd be out of law school. That's five years. So hopefully I'd be settled or settling somewhere. My dream's to settle in some sort of political arena eventually, but I'd be really happy to just be in prosecution, a DA's office or something.
As for my personal life, well. I don't know nor will I try to predict. It'd be cool to actually have a date between then and now, but I have no illusions about my work ethic v. my social life. XD I'll be living on my own in some tiny apartment that will inevitably turn into a shithole, and I might, might just have a cat. I really hope I'm still in contact with the friends I have now, but again, who knows. My nephew will be eleven on the verge of twelve and that is a very scary thought.
I'll be working just as hard as I am now. Hopefully I'll be smarter. Successful. That's all I really want. I don't dare imagine anything higher than that, that's just asking to be disappointed. >_>
2) If a boggart popped out of your closet right now, what form would it take?
BUGS. Bugs. Hate bugs. There is no WORD for how much I hate and fear bugs. Spiders, insects, arthropods, WHATEVER. Hate bugs.
The second option would of course be Samara from The Ring. That shit scared me Christian.
3) What is one weird tradition or habit your family has?
Hm. Weird family traditions. Egg fights? I'm never sure if other people do this. RIGHT, okay, so you dye your eggs for Easter. You make sure to personalize your eggs, because the next morning, EGG FIGHTS. You ready yourself, you aim the pointed end at the egg the other person is wielding, and whichever one cracks loses. You get two shots, one with the pointed end, one with the smooth one.
My mother kicks so much ass at this. I don't know how she does it. But I usually lose, and I'm a pretty sore loser about it. XD
4) If you could make a pet out of any animal in the world, domesticated or not, what would you pick?
You know, when I was ten, my list of these would have been HUGE. Any animal... I'm a bit torn, actually. I usually would pick some sort of big cat. I'm in love with big cats, I always have been, they're these big majestic loping creatures with beautiful eyes and I adore them. Whenever I go to the zoo, I'll just stand by the big cats and stare at them. Snow leopard, probably. When I was a kid I had a thousand snow leopard plushes. They're beautiful.
BUT HOW COOL WOULD IT BE TO HAVE A TRAINED MONKEY. Come on. I could like, make it bring me coffee exactly how I would want it and everyone would be like, "Hey, aren't you the chick with the monkey?"
Tough decision. I suppose I couldn't have both, the cat would eat the monkey. And probably me. Let's go with the monkey. It'll shit everywhere but at least it won't eat me.
5) What's your earliest memory?
I'm willing to bet my earliest memory was standing in line outside of school waiting to go in. I was in K-3 at the time, the nice term for it -- really it was the Emotionally Disturbed kids, but hey. They really didn't know what else to do with a kid who was autistic, since only recently has it even been considered that autism might not actually be behavioral. So they put me in there.
Anyway, we were standing in line waiting. There was a kid named Mario and I distinctly remember thinking or possibly saying aloud, "Like the Mario Brothers." There was a girl named Bridget, too, and I remember that because I was going to be named Bridget at one point during my mom's pregnancy. It must've been winterish because the sun wasn't too bright, white sky, all that.
What a lame first memory. Oh well. Can't choose 'em.
If anyone wants me to interview them, just comment asking, and I'll give you five questions. :D
