There was nothing like James's grin to set someone at ease. Sirius can't do that, because he's forgotten how to smile without James. He can only bare his teeth like the animal he is.
i really, really liked this. this, all of it. it's extremely evocative - fear of aging, nostalgia, longing... things which are utterly sirius. (er, pre-veil.) i love how his thoughts jumble up the now and the then until that spills fatally over into his dreams. a memory that he usually chose to forget. gorgeous.
Oh my gosh... *melts into chair* Wah. You hit my Weak For Sirius button repeatedly. The first line completely just... hit out of left field, beautiful.
Harry, who owls him for assurance that there's someone out there just as much as Sirius waits for his owls for the same reason.
Oh. Oh. That line. Perfect.

You manage to capture what I love and despair about Sirius' character immediately-- the shadows of what he used to be, what he is now, the lost sort of pitfall in the stomach when you think about where he'll go from here. If that makes sense. >.> But really... it makes me so gooey with appreciation. Just... fantastic characterization

(Possibly this may rank as one of the weirdest things I've ever done, "reading Harry/Sirius in Panera Bread.")
