Dear Yuletide Writer!

Nov 11, 2009 23:00

Dear Yuletide Writer,

My requests were totally giant paragraphs and I am sure you already have MORE than enough information to write me a story! But if you want more, there's more under the cut, along with a copy of my requests. But let me just say: I will be honestly happy with whatever story is in you to write, and am much more interested in reading a story that excites you than reading a story you wrote because you thought you had to. I already know what I think about these fandoms - I'm interested in hearing what you have to say. :) So please, have fun, and don't take ANY of my suggestions too seriously.

my requests, plus additional info

In no particular order, partially because I can't remember what order I put them in when I requested them:

Request 1: Mythbusters RPF

what I wrote: For me, it is all about the Adam/Jamie OTP, be it gen or slash. I'm happy with anything from wacky gen friendship fic to sexual tension roadtrip fic to all-out NC-17 bdsm: whatever you like. I suppose my longing is for a story where Jamie and Adam are just complete weirdos who get along, against all odds, and wouldn't dream of working with anyone else. Off-kilter and quirky would please me greatly here, as would flashbacks (how they met) or a bizarre happy casual sex relationship. Please don't kill off or otherwise malign anyone's wife, though - if you want to write slash, I'm happy to assume that it's an AU where they're not married. In fact, AUs would be lots of fun in this fandom - Adam and Jamie in space! Adam and Jamie in 12th century England! Adam and Jamie in the world where everyone's gay! Really, I'd be pleased with anything featuring those two.

additional info: I didn't mention it in my prompt, but I love the build team as well, and would happily read a fic that also included them in some way, so long as Adam and Jamie (and Adam/Jamie, whether gen or slash) was still in focus. Grant! Kari! Tory! Scottie! I love them all, and adore their dynamic as well.

Here are some resources for you if you want to get your feet wet in (what there is of) Mythbusters fandom: there's the
myth_confirmed community here on DW, where there are a few posts; there's Straight Man,
toft's Adam-and-Jamie story that pretty much makes my heart feel all squeezed; there's the tiny irreverent mythbusters vid that I made a little while ago; other helpful links might include toft's "mythbusters" tag and this collection of youtube videos that I made that are all about how I love Mythbusters. Okay, I hope that's not daunting! PLEASE DO NOT FEEL COMPELLED TO DO ANY RESEARCH AT ALL. But if you like research, there you go, it's what I got. Oh! And there are a ton of cool videos on the discovery channel website, as well.

Request 2: The Dead Zone

what I wrote: How about a story about Johnny and Bruce, or Johnny/Bruce? Friendship fic would be delightful, as would Johnny/Bruce slash (that would be LOVELY, in fact) or really any story about what they mean to each other. Or where they have wacky adventures! Comedy is always great, or a plotty story where they solve a case together. If you're not so into Johnny, then the other thing I would really love to hear about is Bruce's past - how he got from his father's church to Maine, and what he went through inbetween, how he grew up. Or, really, a story about his future would be great too. :) Tell me about Bruce and you'll have me at hello.

additional info: The thing I didn't mention in my prompt is that I'm a complete sucker for all the stuff to do with Johnny's visions - how he feels the things other people feel, how he lives all the time with other people in his head, etc., and in relation to that, I'm really interested in how his friendship or boyfriendship with Bruce might play out. Like, exploring issues of touch, intimacy, and friendship between them when Johnny doesn't think about embodiment the way that most people do. Again, though, if you'd rather write Bruce gen than Johnny/Bruce or Johnny-and-Bruce, I'd be equally excited about that - I really want to know what kinds of stories Bruce has to tell us, all the things we don't know about him.

Oh! The other important thing is that I, uh, haven't seen past the end of season three. I'm spoiled for a bunch of stuff that happens, so don't worry about spoiling me AT ALL, but I do prefer stuff that's focused on the first few seasons, if that's possible. Or post-apocalyptic stuff, that's awesome too.

For more info on how I feel about the dead zone, here is my tag for all dead-zone related posts.

Request 3: RPF - Bloomsbury Group

what I wrote:I didn't select "any" here, but I'd be happy with a much larger range of characters than just the ones I've indicated. So Clive Bell, Desmond MacCArthy, Duncan Grant, EM Forster, Maynard Keynes, Lytton Strachey, Roger Fry, Vanessa Bell, Virginia Woolf, and Vita Sackville-West are people whose stories I'd like to hear. This is a fascinating group, many of them were queer in one way or another, and all of them were artists/philosophers/thinkers. I'd love a story that's just about the day to day friendship and love and support and escape-from-the-world and creative-joy and petty misunderstandings and giant arguments etc etc etc that these folks had. I'd love a story about the shifting relationships, poly relationships, threesomes, and gay relationships (specifically, Strachey/Keynes, Forster/Strachey, Woolf/Sackville-West, Vanessa/Clive/Roger/Desmond). I'd love a story about how, as Woolf wrote afterwards, they were able in this little group to be sexual with one another, to discuss sexuality frankly and without judgement; I'd love a story about how this group of friends inspired one another to make art. Feel free to make things up, draw on historical record (Lytton Strachey, a famous homo, once proposed to Virginia Woolf - how and why did that go down?), set the whole thing in an AU, whatever. Mostly I want fuzziness, sweetness, and if possible a sense of queer community/artistic community. I'll be honestly thrilled with ANY story about this lot.

additional info: What I've said above is long enough and probably covers it - I <3 Bloomsbury and want to hear more about them! I'm trying to think of resources, and coming up all scholarly articles (which, if you like that kind of thing, you can feel free to check out Christopher Reed's "Bloomsbury Bashing: Homophobia and the Politics of Criticism in the Eighties," Genders 11, Fall 1991, 58-80. But that's not really relevant to writing me a yuletide story, it's just if you're a litcrit geek and want to read something cool). Let's see, Virginia Woolf's letters and diaries are huge fonts of information on this; there's a decent movie about Dora Carrington and Lytton Strachey called Carrington, with Emma Thompson (I forgot to put Carrington in my list of characters! But I love her too, write fic about her if you want!); Quentin Bell wrote memoirs about growing up with Bloomsbury; there's lots of stuff out there. But I really do mean it when I say that you don't have to stick to historical record on this one - heck, write an AU about Bloomsbury in SPACE, if you like, I'll be delighted.

Request 4: Public Service Announcements

what I wrote: Here is the whole entire canon for this fandom: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wn5_4ruepAc . It's a one-minute PSA about drugs that I saw as a kid, and that used to make me CRY. I just want, with my heart of hearts, a story where these two guys have hugs! As you see in the PSA. Some possible suggestions: a story about these two growing up together and leaning on each other and discovering the world together; a story about these two (who aren't in my mind actual brothers) somehow learning about homosexuality together; a story about whatever happened to make Flannel Bathrobe Guy turn to drugs; a story about the recovery process. There's not much canon to work with, though, so please use your imagination! The ten-year-old in me will be thrilled to finally just hear their story, whatever it might be, after all these years.

additional info: not much else to say, really! It's a one-minute long fandom, after all. I figure that this might be a cool fallback for you if you get assigned to one of my other fandoms, but don't like the prompt. Oh Flannel Bathrobe Guy/Flannel Bathrobe Guy's Emo-Haired BFF! OTP.

some general info on my likes and dislikes:

Again, please take all this as suggestions only! Write the story you're inspired to write. But, if you're stuck for inspiration, here are a few random suggestions.

I like: boyslash, girlslash, nontraditional het (occasionally), nontraditional gender roles, genderqueer or transgender characters, kink, kinky identities, threesomes, poly relationships, queer gen, plotty gen, adventures, quests, heists, best friends, robots, robots who are best friends, aliens, alternate universes, alternate timelines, fannish cliches being gloriously indulged, fannish cliches being gloriously subverted, humour, banter, pratfalls, comedies of errors, hugs, post-apocalyptic stories, artists, people who aren't perfect, sex that isn't perfect, entropy, aging, found-family, found-community, queer-community, roadtrips, pirates, team sports, scifi, frame-tales, nosy narrators, unreliable narrators, first-time fic, established relationship stories, intense non-sexual heartbreaking love, completely irreverent crackfic, and of course puppies.

If you'd like to get a handle on what kind of fic I like, what kind of kinkfic I enjoy, how I like my characters, how I like my gen, etc., then I'd suggest taking a look at my delicious - every story on there is a story I like.

I dislike: stories where queer people = sad people or dead people, character death in general (though exceptions can certainly be made if the story warrants it), stories that are Christmas-themed, and homosexual panic. I will also be dismayed to read a story where the female characters are made evil, killed off, or made into two-dimensional villains in order to get the menz together.

Finally: I am absolutely fine with (and interested to read) stories that explore, include, confront, or critique issues of gender/race/sexuality/ethnicity as portrayed in the source. The best balance to hit, for me, is one where peoples' identities aren't erased - Bruce is an African-American man living in a very white state, Kari is a woman working in a very male-dominated profession, Woolf and Sackville-West and Bell and Carrington are all queer women in the arts in the early 20th C, etc., and those aspects of their lives are important and interesting to explore - but at the same time, I can't stand the Afterschool Special We've All Learned Something Important About Diversity Thank Goodness We've Fixed Racism Now sort of thing. So in short, I'd love to see those kinds of issues explored as part of the exploration of any of the characters you choose to write, and don't mind at all if doing this means that you call The Dead Zone out on its gender problems or whatever.

In conclusion, thank you in advance for making me a present! I cannot wait to open it.

xoxo

love,

twings
