oh look, more people being obtuse. Guys? Saying that Jason Momoa's dreds make him look dangerous and non-human? Is kind of seriously egregiously racist. And when perfectly nice, rational, calm people - several of whom identify as people of colour - come up to you and tell you that it's problematic, without even USING the R word, you should shut the fuck up and apologise with grace. God. If it were me, I would be so ashamed; I wouldn't be able to show my face in fandom.
My favourite part of the thread is where one commenter accuses the questioners of accusing the poster of racism. "You're making us all out to be racist! UR MEAN!" omf.
Actually, no, wait - my favourite part of the thread is where various commenters defend the idea that dreds are "alien" by pointing out that Tyr on Andromeda had dreds and that - wait for it - The Predator had dreds. So they're just a characteristic of aliens! It has nothing to do with contemporary fashion for people of colour, or media stereotyping! I just love how they notice that dreds show up on all kinds of different aliens, but see it as strengthening the idea that dreds=alien, rather than strengthening the idea that scifi tv=often racist. Jeez. It's like, you've got all the evidence in your hands, guys . . . just put it together!
