this is me watching supernatural
I've been watching Supernatural in order to vid it in this multivid I'm making. I've watched many many episodes now, or large parts of them at least.
For a while I was like, ugh, Supernatural is structured around misogyny just as SGA is structured around racism - where SGA needs racism (colonialism, good genes and bad genes, progressivist narratives about technological development) to exist, for its very foundation, SPN needs misogyny (all the torture porn, rape imagery, female victims, female monsters) to exist, for its very foundation.
Then I thought, yes, this makes sense, as SGA is a (poorly made, unimaginative) scifi show, and SPN is a (poorly made, unimaginative) horror show. Bad scifi tends racist, bad horror tends misogynist. Not that SGA isn't misogynist/sexist or SPN isn't racist (god, Uriel has to call people monkeys and savages, really?) but, SGA isn't build on misogyny, and SPN isn't built on racism. John Sheppard and Rodney McKay could be female, and Dean and Sam Winchester could be people of colour, but John and Rodney couldn't be people of colour, and Dean and Sam couldn't be female.
Of course, they're all white men, so the point is sort of moot, and plus this completely off the cuff analysis almost ignores intersectionality, which makes it perhaps less than helpful, but, anyway.
Anyway, I've been watching all this SPN, and for a while I was sort of okay with it, like, I winced and got by the way I used to wince and get by on SGA (or, for an example of a show founded on heterosexism, the way I used to wince and get by on BSG).
But now I'm looking at 4x10, Heaven and Hell, and I don't even know if I can keep doing it. Maybe I've vidded enough, and can stop now. Or hit a couple more episodes on FF and then stop. The torture porn is kind of freaking me out. A lot. I don't even know. I'm all . . . I can't deal. It's so awful.
