Jazzman's testifyin'

Oct 06, 2008 23:22

The cycle of highs and lows is going pretty fast right now. Fortunately I'm in a high right now, and I think it's gonna last.

I've been watching a lot of things lately. I saw a film on Friday and a film on Saturday. Friday was 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall', whichI arrived too late to usher, and I was considering not seeing, but I thought it'd be shit to have to walk all the way back up Conduit (which is a hill so steep there has actually been a campaign to get a ski lift put on it) without having done anything, so I shelled out the two quid for the ticket. And man, am I glad I did. That film is utterly hilarious. I'm not generally a fan of romcoms (in fact,  I can't stand the majority of them. 'Love Actually': FUCK OFF!), but this one is different enough to most and has enough lad-appeal to entertain me very very well. And I'll be honest- Russell Brand not wearing very much just works for me. Ha, and at one point, where Sarah's faking an orgasm, he just has this totally blank we-are-not-amused face, which was so hilarious that the audience actually applauded. Now I have seen applause in a cinema before, but never mid-film.
Saturday was 'Son of Rambow', which I did get there on time to usher, and so saw for free. It was brilliant. Part heartwarming, part hilarious, with fantastic animation scenes. Some parts were absolutely priceless. And the child actors were really believable. A lot of child actors really don't do it for anyone (the kids who did the dub for 'City of Lost Children'... *shudder* those voices), but these were very natural and just very real. It was great to see. The film itself is brilliantly funny, and just brilliantly made. I would urge y'all to see both of them if you haven't already.

And of course there was the Last Laugh yesterday. Which I think was the best night I've ever had there. And this is from someone who's beein going since last September and has only ever missed one show. Matt Reed was compering, and he has been known to repeat material, but everything he said last night sounded new to me. Because it's early in the year, it was absolutely packed as well, and a lot of people were wannabe hecklers. They were mostly terrible at it, but they gave it a good go and they were never rude, and the comedians destroyed the lot of them in many hilarious ways, which is always good to watch.
Al Pitcher was the first act, and he started with this amazing surreal story that had something to do with being bummed by dwarves, and he mimed the different bits as well. He was brilliant. He absolutely tortured the guy who needed the loo half way through his set but didn't want to leave half way through. Which was so cruel, but funny.
And the headline act was Sarah Millican, whose stage persona is this very sweet, lovely woman, who actually says some quite disturbing things, both sexual and sadistic. It's a classic combo. She's absolutely fantastic, and she manages to be very honest and real at the same time as having this sort of off-kilter not-quite-the-real-worldness to her act. And she had Matt Reed (who was really quite drunk) doubled over in the doorway of the sound booth laughing his head off.
I had a wee chat with her in the interval when I brought Arkady some food from Bar One. She was really nice. And while I was waiting for Arkady after the show (he was doing the sound and he missed the last tram home and I said he could crash at mine), Matt Reed called me "sweetheart", which made me go quite pathetically gooey.
Some people asked if I was friends with the comedians, since I'd been hanging aroun the Raynor Lounge after the show finished waiting for Arkady, but I told them I wasn't. I did feel all official that night tho- I reviewed the show for the Forge press. My name shall be in print! My deadline was noon today, only 13 hours after the show finished, but I just managed it this morning. They said they have too much for the arts pages this week, so it'll have to wait till the next issue, but they said it was a brilliant review, especially for something written for such a short deadline.
Also, I want to make icons for them all. I made one for Matt Reed, but could someone help me think of rhymes for the others.

So today's been a good day. I went to a proofreading meeting at one, which means more work experience which will be useful when I'm trying to get a job in journalism without a journalism degree.
I had the first panto rehearsal today. We just did some read-throughs, but it turned out that most people hadn't printed the script off, so we were sharing about five scripts between the entire cast, which is about 36 people. I love my part tho. I'm actually performing quite well in these read-throughs, and I can't wait to start properly acting. And the guy playing the other narrator turned out to be Glen from my Practical Drama class last year. Who is a much better actor than me, naturally.
The dame is absolutely brilliant as well. His name is Tim. He has such a great dame voice.

Even my Friday is going well. It's a 9am start, but the subject, Magic Realism is really fascinating. The tutor is anabsolute legend as well. His name is Michael, and he's Canadian, I think, and I love his accent. He wants to keep it all very informal, so he doesn't mind if we turn up a few minutes late, and he says we can bring coffee and breakfast and things in with us.
I need to start drinking coffee. You can't get vegan hot chocolate.

So all is well in real life.
Internetz-wise, I was wondering if I could ask for some opinions.
After I've finished my series of Howince drabbles, I was thinking of doing an Anthrax/Ebola series, because I've fallen in love with them. It'd be the same challenge, drabble123, but I'm not sure which table to pick. I'd be either Angst1.Forsaken2.Cruel3.Bleed4.Goodbye5.Infidelity6.Bitter7.Untruth8.Fear9.Unrequited10.Empty11.Poison12.Cry13.Scar14.Rejection15.Alone16.Broken17.Loss18.Ache19.Secrets20.Writer's choiceor Sex1.Skin2.Breathe3.Bite4.Masturbation5.Burn6.Shiver7.Boundaries8.Tongue9.Restraint10.Swallow11.Vanilla12.Dirty13.Obey14.Delicious15.Want16.Anonymous17.Scratch18.Whore19.Greedy20.Writer's choiceOpinions would be loved.

And now... could I ask your opinion on something really really girly...
I'm thinking definitely a denim miniskirt, and definitely the Frank N. Furter shoes, with either this:

Or this corset:

Detail on the corset:

I'm thinking that if I go with the sequin top, I'll probably wear either red footless tights or the trusty fishnet stockings, with a silver facepaint mask. If I go with the corset, it'll have to be the fishnets, and I'll probably just OD on purple eyeshadow. I'm not sure if the corset would be a little too demure, really.

All the good stuff over, I have some bad news. Well, it's more bad for me than anyone else, but... yeah.
My internet will go down tomorrow. I called the phone company to get Tom's bill transferred into my name, but they can't do that, so we're having to have the line cut off and a new one put through. It'll only be off for a day or so, but it's the line we get the broadband through, and apparantly they're not making it simple to keep the broadband while the phone line's being changed. Ellis says it could take up to five days to sort out. So I may have to hijack computers in the IC or something to talk to y'all.
I really hope it doesn't take five days.
So it would help if you replied quickly, lol.

To end on a high note, the song I'm listening to now just is everything Howard thinks of himself.
