In the case of "Ms Y", I think it's greatly exacerbated by a number of her friends acting as an unjudging cheer squad, agreeing with everything she says, no matter what. Any dissenting opinion is drowned out by the cheer squad, leading her to have a totally distorted view that everything she says and does is great.
