The first days have actually been better than most I remember. It helps I have a lot of time, and I've actually been using a good portion of that time to work, though my shoulder isn't doing so hot right now, and I think I need to lay off it more. I think what really did it in today was getting my books and carrying them all in one bag with a cord that's not designed for carrying on your shoulder. I might take tomorrow off, depending on how it's feeling. Bloody shoulder.
Maybe Nikki and I will actually get together tomorrow for lunch. The past two days she's had to postpone coffee because of various things she forgot about. That's Nikki, though. Bloody amazing musician, though. We haven't really talked in quite a while, so it'd be cool to catch up and stuff.
A couple ideas for paintings floating around. I need to finish Nichole's mother first -- the woman with the dog. There's this photo of Maria that I suddenly remembered like last night, and I can't believe I haven't painted it yet. I need to get crack'a'lackin. I think my worst class this semester will be a tie of Public Speaking (it would be the worst, but it looks like I got a good teacher) and Beginning Conducting (which, because many music majors are ed majors, is an important class for them, and thus an important class for everyone and that means you should actually care about it and work at it. Unfortunately, I do NOT care, at this point, about conducting.). Though, considering, at least it's no bloody freshman comp or general psych... ick.
Crative writing should be just about awesome times ten. There are a couple students from England in it, one of whom seems quite cute. Cute AND British?! Who woulda thunk! Basically it's a workshop-oriented class, where the class critiques each others. It's kinda monster sized, though, at 24. I think that ties with my Public Speaking course. Theory V will actually be theory I'm interested in - 20th Century. And we're gonna be looking over some great stuff too! There's Black Angels and In C at least in the listenings. I should really work to get my In C recording...erm... started and finished by the time we get to it. Major brown-nosing points with Doc, rock rock on. ;) Let's see... Hist and Lit will just be like hist and lit, though we're due to get to the 20th Century at some point, just not that far into it... which is a shame, because we'll probably end at like 12 tone, and unless you're really used to it, it leaves a bad taste in the mouth and a bad impression that all 20th Century western art music sounds like ram-blam scram-blam noise. Of course, if it isn't a V-I cadance, some people just are lost. How sad. Schoenberg made some awesome counterarguments against the belief that tonality is rooted in nature. Tonality is a system, among many many others, for solving the problem of orginization and structure. Not FORM. Form is a... ahem... form of structure but it is not in and of itself structure. And form is boring to me. At least, the Classical sense - Sonata, Rondo, song forms, Minuet-Trio, etc. I mean, it can be used well and have a meaning, that's awesome. If it's done because that's how it's Done, then that's dumb. The idea of development of key and motive is cool, just there needs to be a point, even one purely abstract as to why a particular form was used.
I prefer to look for structure in other avenues. Color, image, architecture in other ways, what have you. Meh. Enough lecture.
I'm interested to see what my independent study will really turn out to be. A project in ethnomusicology. It'll be held like a graduate level seminar rather than undergrad-holding-your-hand-through-it-let's-meet-every-week. It'll be research that Benjamin's never done before either and he came up with the crazy idea of me writing a paper to be published at the end of it all. Though, being a published undergrad would be pretty sexy. All of everybody would be lining up to give me money. All the lady-fans would rip off their shirts and ...uhm... give me er... burritos. I'd dig that. Burritos taste good and money is pretty sweet. I mean, everyone LOVES people who are published, right? Right.
I want to get an independent study with Dr. Eugene. I should finish my quartet first and I want to hear his piece on Thursday. w00t.
