LJ Interests contagion results

  1. chess:
I learned to play chess at an early age and have always loved the game. For a while in high school I was a member of the U.S. Chess Federation, and I played frequently with my state's only Grandmaster. He always beat me but it was a fun learning experience. I'm a bit better than your average coffeehouse chess wiz, and mediocre in an amateur tournament.
  2. dramatic ritual:
Dramatic ritual is one of the three principal methods of invocation. For the last decade, and especially the last six years, this form has been a major focus of my magical work.
  3. frida kahlo:
I greatly admire Kahlo's work and her willful approach to living. The story of her life is fascinating.
  4. harry smith:
Folk-music anthologist, filmmaker, artist, ethomusicologist, and Kabbalist born to Theosophist parents in Portland, Oregon. His work as a folk-music anthologist was mind-bogglingly influential on the development of American music.
  5. king crimson:
One of the most amazing group of musicians I have ever heard.
  6. memetics:
A meme is a unit of human cultural evolution which propagates through individuals. You might notice that I called this little quiz a contagion instead of a meme. This is because I belong to the internalist school of thought that considers the thought to be the meme, rather than the outer manifestation of that thought (which I consider to be the vehicle and byproduct of the actual meme). Douglas Hofstadter's Metamagical Themas has an very good explanation of memetics.
  7. plato:
Well, what can I say about Plato. Being interested in anything to do with western culture necessitates being interested in Plato, I think. So there he is in my interest list. Now I'm thinking about taking him out, because it's almost redundant to mention him.
  8. scrying:
Scrying is the occult practice of looking at something like a crystal ball and seeing things in it. This can be used for divination, or for seeing the future, or for communication with disembodied entities. I use it for all three.
  9. symbolist art:
Symbols create a nexus of meaning that is impossible to do with signifying words or other communication modes. Art -- saying that a picture is worth 1000 words is oversimplifying it. Symbolist art is a way to communicate that which cannot be spoken, or seen.
  10. twin peaks:
My favorite TV series of all time. I love all the works of David Lynch. As an artist, I look at him as a role model. I can't wait for the second season of Twin Peaks to come out on DVD.
