some things you should concern yourself with (from Slacker_Genious):

The world's largest oil field is over 90% depleted.

With any source of energy, we've got problems of scale. All these alternative energy sources will take generations to replace the oil infrastructure. It took us 140 years to build our oil infrastructure to where it is today, spending billions annually on it all the while. Replacing that with alternative energy sources is no smaller an undertaking.

The thing that must be realized is that cheap oil subsidizes every form of alternative energy. You have to expend a great deal of energy in order to obtain energy, and save for nuclear power generation, oil is the most efficient thing going. Witness how the price of diesel and wind generated power goes in lockstep with oil prices. Some sources (like ethanol) actually have negative efficiency, that is, it costs more power to create ethanol than we get out of it, and biodiesel is similarly near the break even point of efficiency. Solar power? It currently costs $1000 to purchase 60 watts worth of photovoltaic cells. Wind? There are few places in the world where wind blows consistently enough? Hydroelectric? We're actually destroying a great many dams because of the ecological disasters they have proven to be. There is no source of energy, not nuclear, not oil, that we can get online fast enough with even today's demand for the next ten years. And so prices will rise to drive demand down and supply dwindles.
