CHARACTER
✧ NAME: Musetta
✧ SERIES: Giacomo Puccini’s ‘La Boheme’ / Scenes de la vie de Boheme by Henry Murger
✧ HISTORY: Musetta’s life after arriving in Paris at age 20 was seemingly a never ending cycle. Slightly educated, very beautiful and with the voice of a songbird, she entertained at local cafes and bars. When she grew tired of such entertainment, she did what any young woman in her position would do: She began to mistress to the wealthy and elite. Even such, with her mannerisms, she would fit in among even the most rich of aristocracy.
Musetta’s friend Rudolfo introduced her to a painter named Marcello, on a very important evening. Musetta was hosting a party when she fell out with her current lover, the Counselor of State. Legal proceedings called for her furniture to be placed on the lawn to be sold the next morning. Instead of cancelling her party, however, Musetta chose to hold the party on the Counselor’s lawn instead.
From there, Musetta’s charms caused Marcello to be so enamored with her. The two had an affair for a short period, Musetta playing mistress to the penniless artist, before the two of them realized, in astonishment, that they had fallen in love. Despite it all, their arguing proceeded to get worse over time.
One evening, while at a Ball with Marcello, Musetta left on the arm of a charming young viscount, who had previously attempted to court her. During her time with Monsieur Alexis, Musetta returned to Marcello after running into him one day. They rekindled their love until he could not provide what she wanted and she left him once more.
With Viscount Maurice, Musetta attempted to visit Marcello for an evening and instead remained snowed in at her dear friend’s house, standing up her poor lover and leaving on the arm of another. It is just after quarrelling with Marcello and with every intention of returning to Maurice that Musetta is pulled into the dream world.
✧ TIMELINE: Paris circa 1840
✧ PERSONALITY: Musetta is described as a very charming and intelligent young woman. While her intelligence is less of books and more of social grace, she is capable of adapting to any social situation requested of her. Musetta demands attention. When she first traveled to Paris, she started off as a singer, quickly growing in her popularity. However, as time went on, she grew tired of singing and decided to switch to something far more profitable for a young woman of her popularity and charm.
Musetta easily fits in with the upper crust, flirting with those she deems fit (she will not even consider someone less charming and handsome than she), a carrying on witty conversation. As an ambitious young woman, becoming so popular amongst the elite was perfect and she found that as her popularity grew, so did the amount of men. This, of course, went to her head.
Musetta can be extremely snobbish and constantly has a better-than-thou complex. She also has a really hard time committing. She gets bored fairly easily and will cheat on or leave her lover. She has no qualms with it, and perhaps never will.
✧ ABILITIES/POWERS: Nothing supernatural. Musetta’s only ability and power is to be the center of attention, but that’s more because she’s a diva.
✧ TIME OF ARRIVAL: Day
✧ MASK DESIGN: A blue, half mask with flamboyant peacock feathers. The nose of the mask is painted gold and shaped like a bird’s beak.
✧ PLACE OF SOLACE: The bedroom she shared with Marcello when they were together, complete with the paintings she last saw there.
SAMPLES
✧ FIRST PERSON: [Dressed in her absolute best, Musetta did not look like she belonged. Once she figures out how to use the device, however, she smiles brightly at it and waves, wriggling her fingers playfully.] This is nothing if not a terribly exciting adventure. Bonjour, my dears! Please, do not be shy. If I am to stay here too terribly long, I wish nothing more than to get to know those who are trapped here as well.
[She idly runs her fingers over her mask] And furthermore, this is perhaps the most important bit of my little hello, I do hope one of you might say if this peacock feather mask is too garish or not. I’m rather enchanted with it, but that may be a silly woman’s fancy. No matter, I look forward to very honest opinions, so please do not disappoint.
✧ THIRD PERSON:
Musetta was a stunning young woman, familiar with cordial charms and had the ability to bring even the proudest man to his knees. Her tastes in men were fine and her taste in expenses even finer. She, however, constantly grew bored of the men she was mistress to, usually only but a few months into the setting. Musetta was not a girl made for marriage. She was not one to be tied down so easily and it would take a man far more charming than she’d met to talk her into such a circumstance.
Still, the young woman had but to wonder that if Marcello were to ask for her hand, if she’d so easily deny him that one thing. The two of them fought like jackals at their worst and doted upon the other like a pair of sick love birds at their best. Rarely was there an in between. Rarely were there moments where they simply enjoyed the other’s presence, where they were to relax and be with each other as normal love birds could often manage.
Marcello was the fire to her ice. He was her opposite. The man she never thought to fall for. A poor slip of a man who could hardly afford to pay for his flat, much less to put bread on the table two meals a day. He was everything she had sworn not to fall in love with, and she had taken every rightful precaution. He was fun, she enjoyed his company most of the time. . . But he was not what she was looking for.
Even still, as this gentleman professed his love for her. . . His inability to live without her in his life, Musetta thought of Marcello instead. “I can hardly tie myself down in such a fashion, my dear. I am not a girl made for such commitments.”
