Do you love me more than peanut butter
loves jelly? you ask,
as you spread a sandwich.

This is a good question.
I think, well they couldn't
love each other as much as

flour loves water or salt loves sugar,
because these things are inseparable,
no longer distinguishable
once brought together -

and then I am thinking
of more intrinsic pairs.
Inseparables. Atoms. Quarks.
Animals that mate for life.

I look back at you, now cutting
the crust from the bread.
