Author’s Notes: This is also my first attempt at a “Heroes” fan fiction. I have never been to Central Park or Central Park Zoo but I did research it a bit and took some artistic license on the placements and timelines of certain attractions of the Park.
Off to See Gus the Polar Bear
Six year old Peter Petrelli finished reading “The Ugly Duckling,” out loud and closed the book, placing it down next to him.
His nanny, Judy, told him, he had done a great job and then asked him if he wanted a hot chocolate.
He said yes.
She went to the kitchen and left him sitting on the sofa in the front room.
Peter glanced outside the window. He suddenly launched himself off the sofa and raced down the foyer to the front door. As soon as his big brother, Nathan stepped inside, Peter wrapped strong little arms around one of Nathan’s legs.
“Welcome home, Nathan! I missed you!” Peter cried.
Scooping his little brother up into his arms for a proper hug, Nathan said, “Missed you too, Pete.”
Peter happily hugged Nathan.
Nathan had promised Peter that he would be home for Peter’s birthday.
Peter’s birthday was day after tomorrow and Nathan was here.
A thought popped into the little boy’s mind and he pulled slightly away from his brother’s shoulder. A small frown creased Peter’s forehead as he asked, “You’ll be here, for my party?”
Nathan ruffled Peter’s dark bangs and answered, “I’ll be here until the New Year. Then my classes start again.”
The frown disappeared off of Peter’s face as Peter beamed at Nathan.
Nathan set Peter down as Judy emerged from the kitchen to tell Peter his drink was ready.
She welcomed Nathan home and informed him that his parents were at a brunch Mr. Linderman was hosting for the Governor.
Nathan nodded.
His parents were not expecting him until tomorrow.
Nathan had had a chance to leave Annapolis earlier than he had thought and he had taken it. So, here he sat in the breakfast nook, and he and his little brother sipped their chocolate.
As Peter chattered cheerfully, telling him all about first grade, Nathan occasionally perused The New York Times while he listened to Pete.
Nathan, about to turn to the next page of the newspaper was stopped by Peter’s, “Wait, Nathan, what’s the name of the baby animal on that page?” The elder Petrelli brother quickly scanned the article. He then replied, “The baby animal is a polar bear cub named Gus and he is the newest resident of Central Park Zoo.”
“Polar bear cub named Gus,” repeated Peter to himself. Then dark eyes shining with hope, the little boy asked, “Nathan, can we go see him today?
A check of his watch told Nathan that they still had an hour before Gus’s public viewing for the day. The Petrellis only lived a few minutes walk away from Central Park. Nathan could show Peter one of his favorite areas of the Park and then they could head toward the Zoo.
“You’ll do everything I say? Promise you won’t wander off and get lost? Cause Ma would kill me if I lose you.” Nathan said.
Peter bobbed his head up and down and replied, “I promise.” Then Peter giggled when he said, “Nathan, you wouldn’t ever lose me. You’d always find me, no matter what, so Ma can’t kill you.”
For a moment, Nathan couldn’t answer then he did, “Okay, Pete, I’ll take you to the Park but you need a jacket because it’s a little chilly outside and we leave in the next fifteen minutes if we want to make it on time to see Gus.”
His face, alight with happiness, Peter jumped off the chair, ran up the stairs to his room and yelled for Judy to help him find his jacket.
Five minutes later, Peter now clad in his favorite jacket, rushed down the stairs and straight to the front door. “I’m ready,” he announced.
Nathan chuckled as he caught up with his brother at the door.
As the Petrelli brothers stepped outside, Peter slipped his hand into Nathan’s.
Nathan looked down and found Peter giving him a wide, lop-sided smile. The corners of Nathan’s lips quirked upwards in an answering smile.
As Nathan and Peter turned onto the street, walking hand in hand toward the Park, Peter began to pepper Nathan with questions about polar bears, the Zoo and Central Park.
Ten minutes later, they had arrived at Central Park and Peter’s eyes rounded in awe.
“Nathan, it’s huge!” Peter whispered.
“It is.” Nathan agreed. He continued, “We don’t have time to explore all of it right now but we will later. I’m going to show you one of my favorite spots and then we’ll head over to see Gus, Okay?”
Peter nodded, still gazing about in wonder. He held on tightly to Nathan’s hand as they made their way through the park. Only Peter was short and he really couldn’t see anything but the legs of the people they passed.
A second later, Nathan noted that his brother was too quiet and not pointing out things to him excitedly like he usually did when they went somewhere for the first time.
The elder Petrelli gazed downward and found Peter trying to peek around a crowd of teenagers. Suddenly, Nathan stopped walking and tugged on Peter’s hands.
His little brother stared up at him, mystified.
A laugh escaped from Peter’s lips as Nathan flipped Peter onto his shoulders.
“Hold on to my hands and don’t let go,” instructed Nathan.
“Yes, Nathan.” Peter responded. Peter loved sitting on Nathan’s shoulders. He could see so much better now.
They passed a frozen pond with people skating on it and a castle and a carousel which Nathan promised he could ride, the next time they came to the Park.
Finally, Nathan paused by a lake. Nathan and Peter gazed in fascination as sail-boats glided across the lake.
The boats were larger versions of the little boats Nathan had on a shelf in his room at home.
“Nathan, they’re like your little boats but bigger.” Peter exhaled.
A grin spread across Nathan’s face as he heard Peter’s words.
Nathan began to walk again, crossed a small bridge adjacent to the lake and stopped in front of a smaller lake.
“I used to sail my boats here when I was younger,” Nathan confessed.
“I want to learn too.” Peter demanded.
His big brother agreed to teach him how on another visit but now it was time to see Gus.
At the edge of the lake, Nathan had to pause once more because Peter had been enchanted with the statue of “Hans Christian Anderson and The Ugly Duckling.”
He had even asked to be let down from Nathan’s shoulders so he could look at the statue close up.
As Peter petted the duckling statue, he was unaware that Nathan had snapped a photo of him doing so.
Nathan called to him and reminded him about the time. The elder Petrelli held out his hands and once again settled Peter on his shoulders.
They strolled into the Zoo and Peter accidentally kicked Nathan’s breastbone as he shifted while watching the cascading waterfall at the Polar bear exhibit.
The squeezing of his hand had Nathan gazing upward at his brother.
“Sorry, Nathan. Is it almost time for Gus to come out?”
Before Nathan could reply, Gus ambled out of his den and plopped down by the waterfall. A small, furry paw swiped lazily in the pool of water made by the waterfall.
Cameras flashed, startling the cub that turned big, dark eyes in Peter’s direction.
Peter’s comment of, “Gus needs a big brother,” had the crowd standing around Nathan and Peter looking at them curiously.
As Nathan was about to ask why, the little boy continued, “Cause then he wouldn’t be scared like he is now.”
The people around them smiled at Peter’s logic and then smothered chuckles at Peter’s next words.
Looking down, straight into Nathan’s eyes, Peter said seriously, “But he can’t have you, Nathan because you’re my big brother.”
