Speaking of keeping one's guard up...Ellen knew the ability to keep her guard up was something Laura had refined to perfection. She'd practically made indifference an art form. She was that type of woman.
I like this both because it's a great description of Laura and because it gives me the idea that Ellen has been watching Laura and trying to figure her out ever since they met.
I also like the little details like Laura drinking so much and how crappy the alcohol is.
I must say, I dig protective Laura. I love that she's so concerned about Ellen that she's willing to let the truth about Adar out to convince Ellen to stay and maybe so Ellen will feel a little more comfortable opening up to Laura herself. And of course Ellen would be suspicious of the confession but then curious about how Adar was in bed.
I loved Laura admitting to Ellen that she'd do the same thing if she was in Ellen's place and her being so glad that she knew Ellen was safe, at least for tonight. The end to this chapter with the two of them hugging and then getting in bed together left me feeling so relieved for them that they finally relaxed enough to find some sort of comfort in each other.

I picture them both sniffing around each other (metaphorically, or not!) like a couple of territorial dogs... they're such strong, dynamic women, and they're all twisted up in this complicated quadrangle of a relationship the four of them have been thrust into. I could totally see them trying to figure each other out since they met.
I tried to make Laura's comfortability with drinking progress as the situation got worse on NC. Nice that you noticed that detail.
I was relieved for them too... and this scene I worked over at least four times. There's a huge outtake that I'll probably post as a standalone at some point (it's a sex scene between them). I know that probably makes you sad (it made me sad to cut it!!) but it didn't fit with the characters and their relationship at all at this point in the story.
Thanks for reading and for the fantastic feedback. We authors kinda live for this stuff ;)

And I will... just have to work a few things around so it doesn't seem like it's some sort of deleted scene. :)
