The 2nd Law: WhoooHooo!

Oct 02, 2012 19:11

Happy 2nd Law release day! Here in the US that is. I have spent the great majority of the day listening to this album, and wanted to talk a little bit, or maybe a lot, about it. I've seen a few others do it, and I want to share in the feelings as well. And, whether we agree or disagree about anything regarding this album, I think, despite what .mu tends to think, that that is the good thing about being a fan; is that we can disagree. But before I get into the album, I want to take a moment to fangirl a little first.

I hope other people are as excited or even more joyous about this album as I am. The thing that I think is the best part about all this, is this is the new album guys. This cd, that you have in your hands right now, is brand fucking new Muse music. And, as it's already proven, this means new gigs, and pictures, and interviews, and it's a beautiful thing to me that this is finally here, what we've been waiting for. Like, even before I put this album into my car stereo, I had a big ass smile on my face. And to be quite honest, this feels so good because it feels like how I felt when The Resistance finally came to be. I love The Resistance, but I know it gets crap from some people, but that album holds a special place in my heart. The Resistance is special to me, because it was the very first Muse album release that I got to be apart of. I wasn't new to Muse, millionstar trained me too well for that, but it was the first time I got to be apart of the hype. I almost feel the same kind of excitement as I did back then. To me, for as long as Muse is a band, and even past that, we're going to be able to say we were a part of this. And I like that, and it makes me giddy just thinking about that, while holding this album in my hands. Good times are here.

*Supremacy: I really dig this song. I think it has the perfect "hard core" Muse sound. Plus mixed with the strings, it's just RAD. The guitar riff(?) sounds just like that, a riff, and I think it will be fun to hear that come tour time. I love the simple snare drum in the back, it's definitely epic sounding. Maybe it's just me, but I get a Spanish sounding vibe from this song, like a song you would hear in like in a Western movie.

*Madness: Still completely rocks for me. Still really sexy, and still a song that you're able to groove to. Matt's voice is like creamy silk, and it's legit perfect for this song. I love when this song picks up and Matt starts to wail. (lol)

*Panic Station: The song I never knew I needed in my life until now. This is the song I want in my ears 24 hours a day. It's just bad ass. I think I love it even more, after listening to the album version, all thanks to the horn section. Plus, I think the bass sounds totally incredible. Another song I can't wait to hear come tour time. Once I think the nerves of new songs wears off, I think Matt's going to groove the hell outta this song. Plus, I love the way he accents imagination. He's working those words, and making love to them one at a time.

*Prelude: Not much to say, but piano!Matt owns my soul, so I'm glad he got to make a comeback in this album as well. Wish it were longer maybe.

*Survival: Okay, let's face it, this song is ridiculous, but I love every minute of it. I really can't listen to this song without smiling or giggling. The snaps guys, my GOD the snaps. Another song featuring guitar of sex, and holding massive potential for epic cheesy guitar moves. Bring it on Bellamy!

*Follow Me: Bing's heartbeat is totally precious as the opening sound of the song. I think it's a super sweet personal touch. This song is awesome. I love the build up to it, and the electronic action in the background is awesome. With the upbeat tempo that calls for clapping, I could see this becoming a 'Starlight' part two. In my opinion this song gets even better when it picks up and has the full awesome "techno" "electronic" beat behind it. Again, Matt's voice is silky and perfect.

*Animals: To me, this is OoS Muse. I think this is the dark, evil, once again "hard rock" Muse that we hear from OoS. I think this is a song that could easily be slipped in behind 'Screenanger". I love the twisty flowy guitar action we get from this song. I think this song works really well for me. Maybe because OoS is my favorite album. Not so fond of the "kill yourself..." lyric, and I could do without the screaming towards the end, but it fits the song.

*Explorers: My least favorite song on the album so far. I like it, but as of now, not crazy about it. I know this is Matt's version of a lullaby, but still it's not working totally for me yet. I wish the song would have stayed soft and pretty throughout the whole song as it did in the beginning and the end.Instead of picking up in the middle. I hear some of Queen's 'Don't Stop Me Now' in the song, especially the slow bits. Upon second listen, I decided that this song reminds me of the more current Beach Boys sound; ie. the harmony action. This song might have to grow on me a little. The ending of the song is kinda sweet.

*Big Freeze: To me, this song is happy and fun. It's just upbeat and catchy. Extremely full of U2 sounding sounds; EXTREMELY full of U2 sounds. I love the lyric "Don't let the sun in your heart decay". No hard feelings about this song, it's just fun to me. It's the breather on the album, that's enjoyable to listen to.

*Save Me: Excuse me Christopher? Where did this voice come from? And why in hell have you been hiding it from us for this long? I am so completely proud of Chris for doing these songs. I'm a proud mamma. I'm not sure who is playing the main guitar sound in this, but it's really pretty, ad kind of makes me tear up.

*Liquid State: Again, totally proud motherly vibes come from this song. It's a hard song that I think people should like, but coming from Chris it sounds totally different. And in a way, not like it should be a Muse song. Probably a weaker song on the album for me, but the chorus is bad ASS! But given the topic behind the song, I think the angry, hardness, works really well, and is totally fitting.

*T2L Unsustainable: A song that is totally bad ass. I don't care what anyone says because the dubstep, dubrock, is awesome. However, even though I think the song wouldn't be complete without out it, I almost wish that the "newsreader" wasn't included in the album and reserved solely for the music video. If I am so fortunate, I can't wait to see this live. Matt's voice is beautiful, even though he's just moaning and ooohing, is again very pretty.

*T2L Isolated System: This song plays to me, especially the beginning, like it could heard in a horror movie. It's a bit creepy, and I really dig it. Again, a song that I could do without hearing the talking and sounds on top, because I think it takes away from the strings and piano. Once again however, it fits so idk. I think this song is a perfect way to finish the album. It's a great ending to me.

Overall I think T2L works extremely well as an album. I think it's got something  everyone, old or new Muse fans, might be able to find and be able to enjoy. Plus I think it's something new Muse fans, also would be able to pick up and find something that they might enjoy.

I've heard people "complain" about the fact that T2L is a bit all over the place, and I'm going to tell you in this case, why I think it's a good thing. I think 'The Resistance" was SO much of a story album, that at least the first few listens, the best way for you to hear it, was for you to listen to it from start to finish. To me, I don't think the "Resistance" was an album that you could hand to a friend, and tell them to listen to a specific track, I don't think they would have gotten it. Especially if it was a track somewhere in the middle of the album. To me, The 2nd Law works well in that way, because I don't think it reads as a story. I think you could pick it up, and listen to any track you like, or hand it to a friend whose heavy into hard rock, or dubstep, or whatever, play that track for them, and they would enjoy it. Anyway, I think the disjointedness of T2L, uses that to it's advantage.

There you have it. Welcome to The 2nd Law Leather era!

music, muse
