whenever a team wins the world series, youre bound to have people buying their shirts and baseball caps, what made it even more widespread is all the near misses the team had in the past, and the fact that it was 86 years between championships. and the fact that boston (and massachusetts as well) isnt seen as some archaic quaker institution anymore.
and look at our stats, we have the best defence in the entire major leauge, we have one of the best well rounded offences with names like ramirez and ortiz, the pitching has the poential to be the best in the entire leauge and the managment so far has been pretty good.
people also got mighty sick of dan duquette making stupid decisions (my father completely stopped watching baseball becasue of that moron). and jimy williams wasnt any help either. i remember watching games and always asking my dad if that guy was drunk.
but what is strange is the number of people who werent rallying behind the whitesox, who had not won for even longer than us, but i guess people just like the cubs more, and we live in new england.
the same thing happened with the patriots as well, i just dont think people noticed too much.
now look at the bruins and the celtics. two boston teams that were at one time the toast of the town (and the country) , with an incredibly widespread and loyal fanbase and had some of the biggest names in sports at the time, and they havent won since the late eighties if im not mistakened.
it comes and goes in phases. im sure theres gonna be a year when the bruins will be on fire, as well as the celtics, but untill then, your gonna have people rooting for the red sox and patriots, becasue theyre sick of seeing the garden teams getting fucked up.
