So I haven't written/read/played FFX in a freaking LONG time, but for some reason this came to me and I had to write it.

Title: Those Moments
Summary: There was a moment where she thought that it might have all been different.

There was a moment where she thought that it might have all been different. One second where she could have changed it, turned the world on its head and brought him back to her. Just in that moment. And maybe then she could have stretched it on into eternity - living an entire life in the time it took someone to start a breath. But it passed, and that person did breathe and that moment was lost in the past, another missed opportunity.

Once - before - he had asked her what she was afraid of, and at the time it had been Yuna and Sin and everything that was happening on that damn pilgrimage that was making her world crumble to pieces. But she hadn’t known then. It was a question from a mentor to a student, and nothing more. But then they had won, defeated Sin and…he was leaving. Forever. And right as he walked past her he murmured again.

‘What are you afraid of?’

She felt that moment, where everything changed to exactly what it wasn’t and back, and she knew. She knew that what she feared was exactly this. To be left. Passed by with no farewell but a lingering murmur that was lost in a cloud of pyreflies. Beautiful, tragic motes that stayed as long as she did in that place, waiting for her to leave before they did, long after the others had left her with her thoughts. And as the lights stayed close, so did she and she couldn’t help but murmur to them whispers of regret and realization. Things that she knew he couldn’t hear. Things she had left until too late, until that between moment.

They come and go, and if she could just catch one, she knows she could find him again, and love him again as she couldn’t before.

It isn’t until years later - 8 to be precise - that she suddenly feels everything becoming exactly what it isn’t and she can feel him before she can see him - standing in front of her with his hand outstretched and a small smile on his face. And all she can do is take his hand and live.
