On the other end of the phone line, Jean-Claude frowns. "Ma petite?" he asks. The grunting, breathless voice that had greeted (for lack of a better term) him hadn't sounded like Anita. At least, not like a non-distressed Anita.

Despite the heat of the car, the burning of the leather, and the gear shift digging into her side, just hearing his voice made Anita feel worlds better. He'd called her.

He couldn't be too pissed off with her if he called first, right?

"It's me," Anita says. "Sorry, Jean-Claude, I forgot the phone in the Jeep again."

There was so much more she wants to say, but it all sticks in her throat, as it usually does, and so Anita settles for silence.

She couldn't make anything worse if she's just quiet, could she?

She wants to say more, that much he can tell even without feeling along their connection. But Anita is eminently practical, and he knows she would much prefer to hear his reason for calling that to have him prompt her to talk about her feelings.

"The police have taken Jason," he says simply, even repeating it after her initial disbelieving "What?".

Anita shifts along the seats to get the damned gear shift out of her hip. As she lays there, a sick sort of feeling starts to unfurl in her stomach.

"Why'd they take him?"
