Thanks for reminding me about Old Joy. I wanted to see it in the theaters but it seemed to vanish off screen before I managed to purchase a ticket.

it is this journey? that two 30-something alienated friends (who have taken very different paths in life) take together in the woods of oregon. i didnt want to use other descriptions from "movie critcs" but one of them used the word "meditative" to describe the film and it really fits as the woods/hot springs of oregon are just as much a part of the film as the two friends themselves. it is a beautiful and sparse film- not a lot of dialogue (sp).its actually by an american director/writer (which is shocking because its very un-american in the ways that a lot of the action/communication is internalized within the characters).

Old Joy -- is it as depressing as the poster makes it sound?

you know, i thought about this and i dont know if it is depressing. i mean, the dialogue, as i mentioned to another person who asked what the film was about, is very very sparse so you have to really contemplate what COULD be the case/going on and i think that cases the viewer to contemplate their own life? plus, they have many, many shots of the lush, green scenery of the woods/hot springs of oregon so that really pushes the compulsion to just THINK and mull over what could be going on- i really liked this as most movies are ACTIONACTIONACTION. the pace is slow and while this movie made me cry- i dont know if it was ME crying or me for the characters or me internalizing- but it made me think in ways most movies do not.

wow- see, the fact it is still making me think is indicative that it is a provoking film, i think.

i hope you are well and things with you have evened out?
