A little more about Zod: Iron Man and the Hulk are my top two favorite comic heroes of all time. Iron Man, by a hefty margin, has become my overall favorite.
When I was younger, the beast within, Freudian nature of Bruce Banner/Hulk... not to mention all the other gamma kids, Abomination, Sampson, Leader, She-Hulk... was very satisfying. If you gave someone a superpower that HAD to reflect their inner self, what would it be? The rage of the perpetually nerdy Dr. Banner resonated ( NOT Eric Bana... ever... in any lifetime... thats like trying to cast Jessica Alba as a pale caucasian wallflower... ... ohh wait.... ). I was pretty nerdy for most of my life, that repression was VERY familiar to me.
I'm still nerdy, but I own it. The world respects a nerd more than they did a decade ago. My kids won't get the same crap for being the same person I was, thats good in its own way.
The Hulk doesn't resonate as well anymore, I manage the rage, I don't have as much coming in, and I found a few healthy (and not so healthy) ways to get rid of it.
I don't manage other things so well. I'm not an egomaniacal alcoholic womanizer... but it isn't about specific flaws, so much as grown up flaws. Adult flaws. Real things wrong with functional people.
Add to that a man who has obscene technical skills, a tinker savant, electronic shaman... who used that to become a industry giant. Then he's not just relative as a flawed man, but you can aspire to his strengths as well.
Finally, he takes all the good and bad of himself, owns it, and becomes something even more.
Getting to see Iron Man on my birthday Thursday was the greatest birthday present I could imagine. Zod Loves Movies. I've seen 3 in the last 18 months in an actual theatre. In my single days, it wasn't uncommon for me to see 3 in a day.
This is the MOST AUTHENTIC COMIC MOVIE EVER MADE.
Caveat: This story was conceived in the 60s for young boys. While absolutely painfully representative of the source material (and or the "Ultimate" version, depending on the scene), there isn't much STORY there. The downside of being a boy genius alcoholic from an alcoholic abusive father and the drawbacks of being a full time player are much OLDER story elements that come from a much later generation of writers.
Its an action packed thrill ride like no other.
Brilliant on all counts... I'll want depth in the sequel, but for now, I am absolutely satisfied that Marvel... free of FUCKING RETARDS LIKE ANG LEE can finally make comic book movies.
Favreau is a fan of the source, and it works. He makes a fantastic Happy Hogan too.
Robert Downey Jr. was better than I thought he would be, and I thought he would be good. He got it. He was funny.
Interestingly the computer was named "Jarvis" instead of whatever it actually was... grumble... no one on the internet knows this? Jarvis is the Avengers butler... which makes me wonder what their going to call the butler when that movie comes out.
