Character Name: John Egbert

Canon source: MSPaint Adventures/Homestuck

PB: N/A

Personality: John, to put it simply, is derp incarnate. Mostly anyways.

He's an excitable guy, even at the age of twenty-one, and probably one of the most unconditional optimists you'll ever brush elbows with. He's a guy that's hard to bring down and usually tries to keep his head up even in the worst situations. He's honest and just genuinely a good guy.

Thaaat does not mean he doesn't have a mischievous streak in him. After all, his family has a long line of stage magicians and pranksters. He usually can't resist pulling a joke on someone, but no matter what, they are always harmless fun, never malicious.

In addition to all that boundless happy, John is also a reliable hard worker. He's pretty dedicated to his school work and doesn't mind doing a bunch of random crap in between, like work part-time, help his dad cook, visit friends, bother Karkat. He somehow manages to find time for everything, even if that means sacrificing sleep. Which he tends to do. Paralleling this, John is a fantastic friend, and loyal to a fault. If he can, he will help you.

Despite all these bright and shining character traits, John does have his faults. He does have issues with his self-esteem, which probably fuels how hard he works. Though he'd never admit or address it, deep down he finds himself an inadequate person/son. When he was younger, he had a set of reoccurring nightmares where he'd wake up with his walls covered in writing (Things like "fool" and "lame kid".) it stopped after a week and he never told anyone, but he still remembers. Also, John can go from being incredibly gullible and a little too trusting to obnoxiously stubborn and unmovable in a snap, and usually when its not in his best interest. To make an example, when he first gets into the game, he's going to believe he's dreaming very vividly rather than believe he's been transported to another world.

In addition, though this isn't really a flaw as much as its a quirk, John can be extremely dramatic in his gestures and reactions. Basically he thinks of how he would react if he were in a movie and then he proceeds to act it out in real life with a flourish. This includes things like shaking his fist and shouting at the sky, to melodramatic freak outs over things like spilled milk and ruined cupcakes.

A note though, because he's still dealing with the death of his father, he's not quite back up to par with his usual bouncy self. He's still a little muted and somber about the whole thing. The good news is he's pretty determined now to find out what happened, so he has a focus keeping him rooted down.

History: John of this universe is the same John from the game's current AU Karkat and Terezi. His world is an alternate of Earth that doesn't really differ too much from ours. Unless you disregard the existence of trolls and whatever the fuck carapaces are supposed to be. Despite that inclusion, there is still nothing of the magic and weird psionic powers that usually comes with troll and homestuck shenanigans. In that regard, everyone in this universe is human.

John grew up like a normal kid, despite his absent mother. He had a loving father and a half sister he got to talk to and see semi-regularly, and that was all he needed. He also had his two other best friends, Dave and Rose. They were online friends but that didn't make them any less important to him. When he turned sixteen, they even got to meet up. He'd met up with Jade in the past before, but that was the first time he'd ever seen Rose or Dave. It could be documented as one of the best days of his life.

The next best day of his life would have been the day Karkat moved in down the hall. Coincidentally it was the same year he met his other friends. He had been heading to the snack machine a few floors down when he saw all the boxes and furniture being moved in. Of course it was only a vague curiosity until he got a good look at what his new neighbor. Holy shit, it was a troll! He'd heard of them of course but it wasn't like he'd ever seen one out on the streets, or been to their crazy island. So seeing one suddenly move in two doors down was amazing.

He had to go say hi. You know, welcome him to the complex and all that. That was the good neighborly thing to do! Luckily his Dad agreed and they whipped up a batch of cupcakes and strolled on over. Despite Karkat's grudging reluctance, they were invited in. John decided that from that moment forward Karkat was the coolest person ever to have move in next door. He was a troll AND he was a cop. Or well, training to be. Seriously. What was more awesome.

John basically made a habit of always coming over and bothering him whenever he got the chance.

Moving on.

As for school he had a few years in the high school band which he found he enjoyed. His interest in music lead him to eventually apply to Seattle University, where he double majored in Music Theory and Business. You know, so he could have something practical to go with music. He'd thought about computer science at first, but all of his friends very kindly (forcibly) suggested otherwise. Business it was!

To make this whole college thing more awesome, Dave had applied to the same university, too! John's first year of college was filled with hilarious bronanigans, flaming stove-tops, garage jams, snicker bar induced ER trips, and many many lost hours of sleep thanks to him being a double-major.

All in all it was pretty sweet.

Over the summer he got a job playing the piano at a small jazz cafe, nothing really monumental happened.

When he went into his sophomore year all of that changed. John came home from class one day to find the bodies of his Dad and Rose's Mom (Who he knew his Dad was seeing for some time) strewn out in a bloody mess on the kitchen floor. He reacted how anyone would in that situation. He started screaming.

Luckily Karkat was home and could semi-assess the situation while trying to calm him down. The police showed up, John got asked a bunch of questions, everything kind of passed by in a haze.

The whole week was kind of a giant haze to him. He vaguely remembered being shuffled from Karkat, to Dave, to Jade's care. John had no intentions of going into the the apartment and his friends seemed to more than agree. He didn't eat or sleep for nearly three days. It wasn't until the end of the week did he finally start to come out of it. It was then that he ventured back into his apartment.

He really didn't know why. He just felt the need to come back, maybe come to terms with what happened. Either way he found himself at the doorway of his father's room. The room that was ever off-limits, that held a place of inconsolable mysteriousness in John's childhood. He thought about leaving it that way but some greater voice in his mind told him to go in.

Good thing he did. John found a collection of notes left by his Dad addressed to him in the family safe (Which coincidentally had the combination taped to the door). They were sort of vague. Words of encouragement and pride. It took a lot for him to not break down all over again. The last note, though, was at least less abstract. It told him to be careful, that this was all inevitable, and that he was a man now and deserved to know the truth.

Still inside the safe was a police badge.

How does your AU differ from canon? This AU is vastly different from canon. For reasons that have been explained in the Karkat and Terezi app. (Aka SBURB doesn't exist, Trolls are aliens, the world wasn't blown up by meteors.)

The big difference in John himself, is that he's a good eight years older than OU!John. While he is definitely still a huge derp and usually pretty optimistic and happy go lucky, there is a bit of maturity in him that came with age. He is also a little less desensitized to Weird Shit so he'll probably have a hard time believing this alternate universe stuff. Unlike Canon where Weird Shit is all that happened.

Strengths: John doesn't exactly have strengths in the physical department. Like, at all. However, what he does have is his shining optimism, his hard working attitude, and an extensive knowledge of bad-to-decent action movies.

He is also a pretty damn good pianist. John was pretty good when he was thirteen, but now that he's breaking twenty-one, he has the experience to back up the talent.

Weaknesses: All in all, John is about as athletic and physically fit as any pasty-skinned college nerd that grew up on the internet. He's very limited as far as human strength goes and can be hurt or killed as easily as any normal human being. He has even less fighting experience than his thirteen-year-old canon counterpart.

Let is also be noted that John has the most inconvenient stubbornness. He can be a gullible pushover most of the time, but dammit, when its important he's an unmovable rock.

Also the subject of his father's death is still a touchy one. He doesn't like to talk about it and he's still pretty deeply effected by it.

Preferred drop-in point: How about Manhattan? 8D?

What are some of your plans for this character in their new environment? Shenanigans. Uh, basically I love playing AU's and I love bouncing AU's off their canon counterparts. Also I like comicbooky settings and want to see how John adapts to this kind of world, especially after the crap he just had to deal with back home.

GT: wow, um. so i am pretty sure i'm hallucinating right now.
GT: it's finals week and i've been awake for three days straight!
GT: so it's really kind of expected.
GT: i mean, this has happened before. one time i started seeing the joker!
GT: they rushed me to the hospital for that one.
GT: i have to say though, this one is definitely a lot more vivid and crazy.
GT: i've never even been to manhattan! i wonder if this is what it really looks like or if i'm making this all up in my head.
GT: spooooky...
GT: anyways. hiya!
GT: my name is john egbert!
GT: who are all you dream!people??
GT: just because this isn't real doesn't mean we can't be friends.

Third Person Sample:

A hallucination was really all this had to be. Alternate universes and super heroes and all that non-sense? That happened in movies and comic books. You know, in fiction. Not the real world. Nope.

This was just. A really, really vivid hallucination. Like seriously, if he didn't know better, he'd say he was in New York. Maybe he could find Rose while he was in this dream. She couldn't live that far from Manhattan, right?

Though, hopefully he wasn't asleep that long. He really needed to finish his finals and he had a whole lot of other things on his plate right now too.

Like finding clues to his Dad's murder. His dad had left him the hints. Like a small push forward to finding the truth. He'd already spoken with the police Captain about the nature of his father's work, and everything. All that was left was for him to look.

He still couldn't believe it sometimes. That all this time his Dad was working as an undercover cop. He was so good at his job that no one even suspected. Not even John. But still, he had his reasons. His Dad was kind of like a superhero that way. Keeping secrets so no one got hurt? Only...

Only someone did.

Well.

That was fine. He'd pick up the pieces.

Just as soon as he woke the fuck up.
