With deep regret, the City of Baltimore announces the untimely and sudden death of Mr. Edgar A. Poe, Esq., the distinguished American poet formerly of this city, on Wednesday, October 7, 1849. Mr. Poe has been ill and was under the care of Dr. John Moran of the Washington Medical College on Broadway. The cause of death has not been posted and we expect Dr. Moran will make a public statement when appropriate. Funeral arrangements will be carried out by the City of Baltimore at the behest of the grieving family. Details will be announced as they are received. We ask that you keep Mr. Poe in your prayers and mourn the passing of one of America's greatest literary figures. Peace to his manes.
