Alltel was bought out by Verizon, who is rumored to be carrying the iPhone later this month. So I was happy. Until I went down to Alamo a couple of weeks ago and talked to a guy at the Verizon store who told me the sale of Alltel to Verizon was blocked in this area as it would be 'anti-competitive'.
So here, AT&T is buying Alltel.
I went down a couple of days ago and talked to a guy at the Alltel store to get the skinny on it, and he said AT&T's been going around upgrading all of the towers to hybrid tech since AT&T is GSM and Alltel is CDMA. Alltel has been wonderful for customer service and quality of service, and I'm really afraid that AT&T's lack thereof on both counts is going to corrupt them and my service is going to go to crap.
I should find out what this will mean re: national coverage since AT&T's national network is GSM, I guess my phone in Phoenix would switch over to Verizon's towers. I have a feeling it's going to be one giant mess.
But regardless, I'll be able to get a smartphone, either in the form of an iPhone or an Android. Alltel's smartphones were all based on Windows Mobile, and I refuse to own one.
