Five Answers part 1- Want Your Rad Bromance

Aug 30, 2010 20:08

Yes, I am going to spread this out! Partly because I promised pictures and if I cram them all in one post it will be one helluva long post, but also partly because it'll be nice to do a frequent posty thing. I'm answering the questions in no particular order, so we'll begin with skelody 's question: Top Five Non-Romantic Relationships.

5. Yotsuba and Koiwai
(Yotsuba&!)

I'm something of a sucker for daddy-daughter relationships, and the one in Yostuba&! is pretty much as perfect as it gets. Koiwai is an alarmingly laid-back dad (witness his pathological aversion to trousers and the fact that he lets Yotsuba wander off fairly frequently) but he genuinely loves and cares for his adoptive daughter. And Yotsuba clearly adores him- when a next-door neighbour, trying to explain the concept of 'breaking up', asks Yotsuba to imagine that her dad doesn't love her she becomes inconsolable. They work well together and part of the charm of Yotsuba&! for me is reading about this sweet, tiny, unconventional family.

4. Titus Pullo and Lucius Vorenus
(Rome)

And then there are some relationships where you're just kind of stuck with the other person- so it is for Titus Pullo and Lucius Vorenus. These two couldn't be more different; Pullo is a straightforward legionary thug who, while he helps people he likes, mainly wants to fight, get drunk and have lots of sex. Vorenus is a centurion who does his best to live up to the Roman ideal. Somehow, Pullo thinks that the two are friends. You get the feeling that Vorenus would be a lot happier without Pullo around. However, fate keeps throwing them together and their relationship develops into an odd kind of friendship. These relationships are the most entertaining to watch, sometimes. You just can't help but see how they work out.

(Please note I'm only up to episode 3, so this could change!)

3. Doc Worth and Conrad Achenleck
(Hanna is Not a Boy's Name)

This isn't even a friendship. It's an unhealthy bond of antagonism that is absolutley hilarious to outsiders. Both Conrad and Worth are incredibly bad for their roles- Worth is a walking medical hazard and Conrad is possibly the world's wussiest vampire- but Worth admits to his flaws. Conrad's still trying to work through his. Worth, of course, delights in needling Conrad about his failings. And the angry response he gets only spurs him on more. Eventually they'll probably end up killing each other, but for now their interaction is one of my favourites in the whole comic.

2. Gabe and Tycho
(Penny Arcade)

Now this might look like a Conrad/Worth or Pullo/Vorenus situation here, but trust me- Gabe and Tycho are best friends. They are married in the true Scrubs J.D/Turk sense. It's just that their friendship has existed for so long that it has developed into, well, this. Gabe and Tycho need each other, as much as both of them would probably deny it (the characters would, anyway. Real-life Gabe & Tycho would probably own to their bromance). They just don't work on their own. This is one of the best kinds of relationships- one where the whole is definitely greater than the sum of their parts.

1. Asterix and Obelix
(Asterix)

This is it, guys. My number one non-romantic relationship. To me, Asterix and Obelix are the pinnacle of how a non-romantic relationship would be. These two would, literally, die for each other. Even when Obelix annoys the hell out of Asterix (and he does this about twice a week). Even when Asterix's bossiness becomes unbearable. Even when Obelix's dog/addiction to magic potion is more of a hindrance than a help. In Asterix and the Cauldron, Asterix is exiled from his village and Obelix exiles himself because he can't imagine life without Asterix. Nobody can separate them and honestly, why would you want to?

So that's my top five nonromantic relationships. I hope you enjoyed them!
