Now, see, this encapsulates my experience with perms: great out of the salon, but a disaster for me as a day-to-day look.
Yes, the round brush/blow dryer will get you the silky texture. Your naturally kinky hair, when straightened this way, should still have wonderful body and shine. BUT, you also need product (probably a curl relaxing styling I'm thinking something like TIGI/Bed Head's Control Freak products). If it were me, I'd check back with the stylist and get exactly what she used. What's the sense of getting a great "do" but not be able to do it at home?
I will check back with her. Whatever she used turned my how into silky straight perfection instead of this wooly fuzzy mess that I have now.
Some of the problem is just learning how to do my hair again. I haven't "done" my hair in ages. I just run my fingers through it and go, which is great for super short hair, but if I grow my hair out even a little bit, I have to do something with it.
Part of the problem was the product I was using. It said "use a dime-sized dollop" and I was thinking "but I want super straight hair" so I used a lot. Yesterday I tried again and used less product and it worked better.
I did get some Bed Head but not the TIG. Dang! I'll see if I can take it back and exchange it.
Next month I'm getting a professional color for the first time. Using the rinse just isn't working all that great for me. I want to have it done by a professional. I'm tired of looking like trailer trash.
Now that you have money to spend on self-improvement, even more than professional hair color, the single biggest thing you could do, IMHO, is to get your teeth dealt with. When my dad finally got good porcelain inlays (or whatever they're called--veneers?), it took twenty years off his appearance. You have classic "tetracycline teeth," I think, and veneers would make a big difference for you.
Actually I DID get my teeth fixed right before Thanksgiving. I just haven't posted about that part of my life, what with the search for the perfect trolly and all. They look fantastic! They've been jacked up since I feel on my face something like 30 years ago. The difference is amazing and I have so much more confidence since having it dealt with.
Oh, it's White Linen by Estee Lauder. I know that lots of old ladies wear Estee Lauder, but I first got it as a gift from my then mother-in-law and have always gotten lots of compliments when I've worn it.
Then today my patient said "mmmm, you smell good". Excellent positive reinforcement.
I wanted to scented body powder because after pushing the machine around and all the physical work of getting set up, I'm sweating like a field hand just about the time I'm getting ready to lean over the patient and hook them up to the dialysis machine. I KNOW I was reeking of B.O. and I felt terrible putting the patients through that. The powder keeps me dry and if I do sweat it smells like the powder.
