After so many sleepless nights feeling miserable and dissatisfied with my life, I decided I had to make a decision so I can feel it ease. I decided that I most definitely want to stop working acute dialysis. Night after night as I find myself standing around the ER parking lot at 2 o'clock in the morning, I realize this isn't what I signed on for. I almost never get assigned the nice hospitals that I was promised to work in when I took the job. I realize I was sort of punked when they lured me into working for this service.
It's probable that they didn't expect that business would be slow on this end of town. They keep sending me to the ghetto hospital because that's patient population we see the most. Three days out of four I'm there. I don't mind being there all that much, but it's the drive over that I hate. It doesn't help that gas is so expensive right now. When I thought I'd be working in hospitals in my neighborhood I was happy about not having to spend a lot for gas, and not a lot of time driving back and forth.
Then there is the disorganization of our work assignments. There are so many days that I don't get sent on an assignment until the afternoon which means I end up working late.......again. And once again I'm hanging around the parking lot at 2 a.m. with the nurses and paramedics.
I decided that since it's taking so long for my Ohio license to go through, I could go back and work in my old chronic unit until that happens. I can't stand waiting anymore. I have to make a change.
So I called the clinic manager at my old clinic to let her know that I want to come back and work there. The nurse I talked to told me they don't have anything right now.
Dang it.
Then as luck would have it, the other day I noticed that my work permit for Ohio has come through. I decided to go ahead and let the travel company know that things are happening and by the time they find me an assignment there's a good chance I'll have my Ohio license. So I called my recruiter and he said "unfortunately I don't have anything in Ohio right now."
Dang!!! Double dang!!!
I never dreamed this would happen. I feel stuck in this spot. I spent so much time trying to figure out which direction I should go and all the doors have closed.
I hadn't talked to the clinic manager at the chronic unit. I want to hear it from her that there is truly nothing available, and then I will despair. I was talking to the secretary and she said "I was talking to (the regional director) about you wanting to come back and there might not be a position for you and she said 'find her one. We want to keep her'". That made me feel so fantastic. They might try splitting my time between two clinics. The only problem is the next nearest clinic is about 20 miles away in a not-so-nice neighborhood, and I would be coming home in rush hour traffic. But I haven't talked to the clinic manager yet. I've called three times and she hasn't called back and I take that as a not-so-good sign.
So my options aren't looking so great at the moment, but I don't want to despair yet. I have to remember that today is not forever and things can change in the blink of an eye.
