It's been nice this morning to stop and slow down a bit, catch up with laundry, have a lie in and next I shall have to tackle trying to get my photos of my camera. It's the first clowdy day for a while but it's still a beautiful area in Franz Josef.
Yesterday was the best day of my South Island trip so far. I got to walk on the front part of a glacier and it's one of the most amazing and beautiful things I've ever seen! Walking up to it you can see this huge tidal wave that's flowing down between these mountains on either side and it's look frozen in mid movement. It's hard to graps the fact that it's still actually moving, but walking and climbing through it's waves is so wonderful and hard to describe.
That evening I went for a little walk after my first failed photo burning attempts and there is a path you can follow that is like a corridor between the trees. You're surrounded on all sides and it's just as beautiful as the ice but in such a different way. You follow it for about 15 minutes and pass along part of the river which when full will be an awe inspiring sight and even almost empty you can still look across this large plain of space and imagine the potential. Knowing of course that if you follow it upriver you will come to the glacier itself.
The path leads to an area that at night is filled with Glow Worms. There are hundreds of these tiny blue lights covering the trees and under stones. Walking along the pathway you can also see them littered everywhere. I was there before it was dark on my own and sneaked passed the rope at the end of the passage and climbed into this huge hollow in the ground, looking up you're surrounded by these steep high walls covered in green. It's so peacefull and breathtaking. I didn't know about the Glow Worms and waling back I passed a couple of people who I had met previously, as we were following a similar route down the coast and we kept passing each other. They had torches and I went back with them and saw the worms.
Seeing things alone and with people are very different and I think I got the best of both. Walking back on my own in the day I stopped at point where you could stand on the edge of the river and look out over the mountains and skyline. It was the first time I really felt like I was in another place and it didn't matter how many people had seen it before me or will after. In that moment I saw it and it doesn't make you feel small and insignificant in the grand scheme of things.
It makes you feel so lucky to be part of this amazing place that has such beauty in it.
