I've just got home after the convention in London, Heathrow this weekend and I figure if I write my update on it now I'll actually do it, instead of waffling about it for ages and then never getting round to it. It's been a different con that the ones I've done before, which made it a new kind of experience, but still a very nice one. I also now have the Serenity Ships Papers from QMx which are awesome!
After being away for a year I was especially looking forward to catching with people I hadn't seen for a while, as well as those I got to see at the Flan/B3/Back-Up-Bash convention. Big thanks to
cerulean_blu who sorted out the tickets and hotel room for the weekend too, you're awesome and with the Doctor Who love. Waves to my french peeps too
the_swordman,
grimma and
fan_elune.
This was the first con where I haven't been as interested in meeting the guests and getting photos and autographs. Talking to Richard Brooks in the Meet & Greet was really nice though, a bit of politics and France. He was good in the talks as well, I only saw him on the Sunday with Morena which was a good chat with some good questions. He sang for us Saturday night which was a treat and Nector Rose who is always really sweet and fun Dj'd with a really nice mix of rock and pop traks and some new stuff I hadn't heard before.
Saturday I just had a nice lie in then hung around with
cerulean_blu stewarding the Dealer's Room. Got some interesting insight into the job of the professional autograph hunter, which was an interesting perspective on celebrity. I can see why some stars don't like the mass signing you get at premiers and getting collered by their hotels and airports. Not something I would ever want to do.
Friday night after the M&G was also great fun during a little side trip to Slough on the hunt for a Tescos. There I ended up jumping around like a 5 year old when I saw all the Doctor Who stuff they had. I'm now the proud owner of another Sonic Screwdriver (who doesn't love sonic), Psychic Paper, Tardis note book + pencil, ruler and stickers, Tardis money box, Doctor Who magazine issue 39 and Dalek advent and new year calendar. As there were a couple of birthdays in the party we also got a Tardis with Tennant Doctor cake. The spunge was quite nice and we or course ate the Doctor and Police Call Box sections. The blue icing was a little on the scary side though and we all suffered severe blue tongue and sugary chemical overdoses in the process, tough worth it of course.
The two songs that played in the final two parter for Doctor Who also got much playing along with the Doctor Who dance and I reckon will become regular con songs now. Me and Elisa rule the Scissor Sisters song! Which incidentally got played every night. ;-) The parties were lots of fun as always with much dancing and group dances. It's like line and barn dancing for nerds and geeks.
Sunday after another nice lie in I went to some of the guest talks and had a good chat with my UK browncoat friends as well. It was great seeing Wendy, David,
triciasingleton,
katyh100 and
helygen as well as meeting some people I know by screename on the message boards, such as Diluki, Clarry and Amar. Hopefully quite a lot of us will be going to see David Tennant and Patrick Stewart doing Hamlet in Stratford next summer too, which should be amazing!
I got to meet
thunder_nari Sunday night at the party too which was very cool, I read a lot of her Firefly writing and she's excellent, I'm a big fan.
To be honest I had doubts about whether I wanted to really go to the last Firefly con next April initially, as I wasn't sure if maybe I had worn out the confun, but once I got to used the feel of it and heard who some of the signed guests are I rather changed my mind. They're as much if not more about seeing the people I know again as seeing the guests themselves. Apologies if I missed anyone out that I talked to this weekend, I can't always remember everyone's names.
I've now got 10 days to get ready for my trip to New Zealand and the Browncoat Cruise after that, and then I'll be back to the grindstone of earning an honest living, but only for a little while. *g*
