Survival

The first day of school didn’t kill me. I woke up yesterday morning with the jitters, and John’s dad (who had stopped by) was quite amused with me vocalizing every five minutes that I was going to get sick.

I didn’t.

Nor did my voice crack, which is surely a feat to praise about, after lecturing more than I anticipated about the rules and procedures, along with expectations and assignments.

I had the students fill out a “Getting to Know You” form. The last question was, “Tell me something about yourself that I should know.”

The answers that caught my attentions were: “That I have a quick temper”, “I have a poor attitude”, “I anger easily,” “I am sweet and mean.” This all strike me as statements that an adult would make, yes? And once you’ve heard them more than once, you believe and become them. I have many challenges ahead of me.

Then, there were the answers that pulled at my heart, “That I’m really a good kid.”

This year will be an interesting one, that much can be determined.

On a completely different subject, there is this pungent odor coming from my car. It has progressively become worse over the past couple of weeks. Initially, when I turned my air conditioner on, I would notice the smell, but it would dissipate after about five or ten minutes. Now, however, it is overwhelming. At first I thought that it there was something wrong with the engine or the air, or one of the many other parts of the automobile that I’m not familiar with, except the car is still running fine. I cannot really explain the smell, but it doesn’t really take on any fluid odors. There are no empty salad plates or coffee mugs in the vehicle either (I checked!). Anyone have any plausible ideas of what it could be, or what I could do to put an end to this olfactory horror?
