Who: William Jesse Grant
What: Lonely times at the beach
Where: The beach in the Eastern District
When: Monday night
Warnings: none

There is something about the beach at night that draws William Jesse, even after several years here. All his bad experiences, even the water based ones, and yet… this is where he feet lead him, when his restless heart can not abide and sleep eludes him. The preacher boy drags his feet in the sand as he walks, shuffling, his shoes tied together by their laces and hanging over his shoulder.

Encountering a stone, William Jesse reaches down to scoop up the rock. He passes it from one hand to the other as he walks, before turning to fling it out into the ocean. “Why did you leave?” he asks the night sky, and the water, and the sand, and the splash that the rock makes.

“WHY?!” The preacher boy shouts at the ocean, snagging and throwing another stone. It feels good, to shout, to raise his voice and let the sound of the water against the sand cover his frustration. He reaches down and picks up larger one, the size of his fist, takes a step into the water and throws it as hard as he can, “WHY DID YOU LEAVE? Why could not you stay?”

“ Why did you leave me? Why does everyone leave me?

He’s not talking about Wheeljack any more, or, rather, not just Wheeljack. But Johanna, and Jazz, And Dead End, and Castiel, and Marrow, and so many more. The boy had planned to spend his life riding, to recognize that sometimes he wouldn’t be able to come back, that he would miss important moments in the lives of the people who are and would be important to him. And this is so different. He stays, and they leave. And how many of them ever come back?

William Jesse has to have hope that Wheeljack will come back. And that Johanna finds happiness, with her fiancée, in her world. Did he ever have a right to think…. To dare to hope… that she would choose him, here? He really is a fool.
