Chie didn't think she'd be wearing her yukata again so soon. She'd woken up in the middle of spring in the city, but it had been October in Inaba, so that put a six month time difference on everything. Trying to calculate how long it had been since the summer festival, or her birthday? It all gave her a headache, so she decided to stop trying to do the math and just enjoy a second summer. It was her favorite season anyway ( ... )

Haruhi had been wandering through the stalls herself when she spotted Chie by herself. She smiled and headed over. "Hi, Chie," she said by way of greeting, glancing over at what was in the stand and eyes widening slightly. She was going to be eating too much today, she could tell already. But it was a festival, after all.

"Yo, Haruhi!" Chie grinned openly at the former Welcome House boarder. Just because Haruhi moved out didn't mean that Chie felt any less protective, or any less inclined toward keeping in friendly contact. The yukata seemed to fit him well, he didn't look one bit awkward in it. He probably wore them all the time, Chie reasoned.

She planted her fists on her hips, smiling cheerfully. "Glad you decided to come check things out. Enjoying it so far?"

"Yea. It came together really well!" Haruhi got some of the food from the stand herself, looking back at Chie with a smile once she had taken the bowl. "How are you?"

"Doing great! Lots of sunshine, fresh air, great food... Girl can't ask for much more than that, heh heh!" she grinned, somewhat sheepishly. "I guess you came on your own?"

Chie had thought he would come with the twins, since they seemed fairly close, but maybe he had and they'd already split up.

"You wanna walk around together for a while?" she suggested. There were still a lot of things she wanted to see, and it was definitely better with a friend in tow.

"Yea. I came early to help Inoue-san. It was really nice of her to organize all of this," Haruhi replied, "I wanted to help, if I could. Did you come with anyone?" A lot of people came to festivals with friends, after all.

"Sure! That would be fun." She looked around at the stalls. "Have you seen much yet?"

Chie shook her head. "I used to come to these with Yukiko and my other girl-type friends, but everyone I'm friends with here is a guy. If I showed up with one of them, people would think we were dating. I'm kind of an early riser anyway," she smiled, rubbing the back of her head.

That's right, Haruhi. You're one of those guy friends.

"A couple of things! I met up with my friend Yosuke and we tried out the hammer game and the shooting gallery. Got a frog out of it," she laughed, holding up her plushie. "Oh, and the food booths here are really good, especially the yakitori stand! What about you? Anything you're dying to go check out?"

The comment about only having guy friends completely went over Haruhi's head. She never really bothered to correct people, and seeing how people at school thought she was a guy, it didn't even occur to her.

"I've mostly seen the food booths, so far." Haruhi had definite preferences towards though. "I haven't even gotten to the games yet... I never spent as much time with those back home, it might be fun to try them here."

"Oh yeah, that's right!" Chie blinked. "I forgot you guys were from that ritzy private school. I bet your festivals were a lot different than ours! I think you'll still have fun at this one, though," she chuckled, only too happy to lead the way back toward the gaming section. "Sometimes the cheesiness makes it even better."

Haruhi hadn't even been thinking about those. "Ouran's festivals are... interesting," she said with a sigh. Not that they couldn't be fun, but it had been such a culture shock the first time. "I've been to a couple more like these, around my apartment."

"Apartment?" Chie blinked, looking at her slightly taller companion. "Then you don't live in one of those fancy penthouse condos, or anything like that?" She was fairly surprised, but she supposed there was still a lot about Haruhi she didn't really know.

More than she realized.

Oh well, that's what events like these were for, to get to know each other better!

Haruhi shook her head. "No. I'm a scholarship student. I wouldn't have been able to go to Ouran if I hadn't done as well the application exams." She ate a little more of her food. "I'm not sure I'd want to live in a place like that, even if I could. It just seems... kind of excessive, for two people." She was a bit more practical than her fellow Host Club members, and couldn't understand why they 'needed' everything that they didn't understand how she lived without.

"You got a scholarship to a school like that?! No way!" Chie laughed. "You must be a borderline genius or something!" After all, the thought of Chie being able to pass exams like that was laughable. Studying just wasn't her strongest suit.

"So there's only one person living with you? I'm guessing it's your mom or your dad." She found herself growing more and more curious. Haruhi didn't seem like the type who freely volunteered information unless it was asked for directly. "And feel free to tell me to butt out if I'm being too nosy. There's just a lot I don't know about you."

Haruhi smiled a little, pushing her hair back. She was fairly proud of her academic accomplishments, but she still wasn't one to boast. "I just a study a lot, is all," she said, shrugging, but the smile not going away.

"It's alright, I don't mind." It was true that she did share much, except when asked, and she only asked questions when something really caught her interest or she didn't understand it. "It's just me and my dad."

"Okay, yeah," Chie nodded. She was curious about where Haruhi's mother was, but divorce and death, the two most likely answers, were both extremely sensitive topics, and she had enough tact not to sail through those murky waters. "Even so, that takes guts to apply for a scholarship like that. What made you decide on that school in particular? I mean, I'm guessing you probably have a goal already set up in your mind, or you wouldn't be gunning for it so tenaciously."

Haruhi nodded. "I want to be a lawyer. Ouran's a really good school, and it will really help with getting into colleges, so I applied. I wasn't sure if I would make it in, actually, but I figured that it couldn't hurt to try." She smiled, looking over at Chie. "What about you? What's your school like?"
