Roxas didn't even feel himself slipping away from the room. Whatever was said after that didn't mean anything to his ears. All he could see was Ven, and all he could feel was a sense of calm focus, contradictory in its consuming haze that blocked out the world around them. He could feel something was here...

Something was with him.

He could feel someone there. It was what brought him back to some semblance of a conscious state. But...he wasn't supposed to exist anymore, was he? His heart had shattered, after all. So how could he be here? Not that...he knew where here was. It was warm, though. Familiar. Like something from a long time ago...

I'm not supposed to be here-- He thinks, and he nearly goes back to sleep, then. To that state of near-non-existence. Except that feeling--like someone was there with him--brought back a memory. A promise.

That's right. I promised...that I would go back. But how could he go back, when he didn't have anyway to go back. After all, he didn't exist, not really. He was just--But there was someone there, right? So maybe they were listening. Maybe...maybe they could tell everyone he was sorry he'd broken his promise--And so he concentrates. He tries with all he has to be heard by the person he knew was there:

"Hello?"

Roxas doesn't know where the voice comes from. Somewhere inside of him--because he knows he's there, within himself... He just doesn't know how. It's confusing, but he doesn't try to dwell on that. He's concentrating on the fact that there is a voice there inside of him... and a familiar one. His own.

Ven's.

That realization makes him nearly lose the fragile and fleeting connection, but he holds fast to it, the only physical sign of this is a very slight and sudden wince that's gone in half a second.

Roxas reaches desperately out to the voice's source, feeling something rising when he does. Something... full. Something he knows well, but can't place.

"Ven..?"

"Roxas?"

If he could laugh, he would. Because it seemed kind of ironic, that the person listening was the one who looked like he did. But he didn't think on it long, because he didn't know how much time he had. It felt like he might sink and fall away again, and that worried him. He wasn't ready to go just yet.

So he focuses, and eventually the feeling itself falls away. I'm not going anywhere, He decides not yet. Not until he gets his message through.

"I'm sorry."

He can feel that fragile feeling start to fade, and with a bit of concentration of his own, he wills the connection into solidity. He won't let go of Ven, not now; he finally found him again, and he's not letting his friend leave. He won't give up on him--on any of them. Angelii, Ashura--his ranking didn't matter. He was determined to become someone who could be depended upon by all of his friends.

Now was the perfect time to put that plan into action.

"You don't need to say sorry... You made it back. Just not all the way, I guess..."

"I did?"

He didn't remember returning through the gate. He remembered falling into that familiarity after finishing Vanitas-And by extension, himself-off. But he didn't remember anything after that. He was happy, knowing he'd been able to keep part of his promise, though. That he'd managed to make it back despite everything.

"Then...I'm sorry if I worried you guys."

"Don't worry. We're fine... You've been out cold for a few weeks, though. I don't really know how I'm talking to you now, but at least I know you're there."

That really was a wonderful thing to know. It was going to make this a little easier, hopefully.

"I don't know how you are, either. It shouldn't be possible, but--I'm glad."

Not just because one of his friends could hear him, but also because it made it seem like there may be a way out of this mess and back into his body.

"Can you feel anyone else..? Or just me?"

Now is the time for questions. More questions means more answers.

"It's just you."

Which made him wonder if they had more of a connection than their identical looks.

Ven wasn't the only one thinking that.

"... There has to be something we've overlooked when we talked about us before, Ven. It can't be coincidence."

"I know, but I don't know what we could have missed. I don't even exist in your time, so I--"

He stops and thinks for a moment. What could they have overlooked? Sure, he knew a lot more now, but he couldn't figure out how it all fit together.

"I just...don't know."

Roxas could feel frustration quickly starting to bubble up in him.

"There's something. Some... link. Something that makes us so similar..."

Reply

ventrust May 15 2011, 23:40:55 UTC
"A...link."

What kind of link? They both had keyblades, neither one of them had hearts, they looked the same...

"Vanitas and Sora looked the same too..."

But that didn't really answer anything. Vanitas was his darkness, yeah, but he didn't know why he looked like Sora of all people.

"... But they're nothing alike. And you and me... We're really different, but we're still similar."

This didn't make sense. What could possibly link them together like this?

Ven knew it was a long shot, and really he's just grasping at straws. But he didn't know what else to do, because...they needed to figure this out. It was part of the reason he went home in the first place.

"Maybe...we're looking at this from the wrong angle?"
