.... *SIGH* lastminutestuff April 17 2010, 03:41:48 UTC
This was not the way he would have preferred to meet her, but it was, unfortunately, the way that he usually got to know people.

He had hesitated when taking the lifetimer from the shelf, as if questioning if it was correct. He knew better than that, and he knew it was not the first time, nor would it be the last that he was called to harvest an acquaintance.

No, not just acquaintances. It wouldn't have bothered him as much were it simply that, were it not this place. He had allowed himself to befriend people here. But he had to remind himself that he had a reason for being here, as well.

His shadowed visage looked down upon the bloodied form as he appeared there within the room. As though expecting the name to have changed, Death slid the lifetimer out from his black robes, holding it up to read the letters that were engraved along the curve of its metal rim: VIRGINIA POTTS

Pepper Potts stood nearby, facing a stack of books and away from the corpse. She kept touching her hair, the back of her head as if looking for something. She turned around and nearly jumped out of her skin (if she still had any).

"Oh." She began, "Hello." She cast a sideways glance around before asking, "I'm sorry, I didn't hear you come in." She knows him from the Network, recognizes him, but is so preoccupied with the nagging desire to mess with something in her hair that she hasn't quite put two and two together.

MISS POTTS, intoned the Reaper, bowing his head in greeting. He watched her, suddenly feeling a little awkward being there. But duty was duty, and she would eventually have to know.

The bony fingers tilted the lifetimer in hand again, and he glanced at it again before taking a step towards the woman.

ARE YOU AWARE OF WHAT HAS HAPPENED?

That voice was strange. Unnerving, a little, in a way that commanded attention in some involuntary way. She glanced distractedly at Death again and shook her head.

"No, but I..." Her hand went to the back of her head again, "I think something hit the back of my head--" She spun around, showing nothing on her back or head, "Do you see anything?"

And that's when she saw her corpse. Pepper screamed.

"Oh, my god!"

He looked about ready to say something to that, but by then, Pepper had already moved. In a split second he was saved the trouble of explaining one thing, and rather than wait, he decided to complete things all at once.

The lifetimer vanished within his robes, the tall scythe he bore, spinning quickly, the blade's sharp edge glowing blue as it sliced atoms and neatly swept between Pepper's body and soul. In the next second black would fill Pepper's vision as Death interposed himself between what was left of her and the bloody body on the floor.

...I...AM SORRY...

She missed the whole thing. Death harvests one more soul.

Pepper put out a trembling hand, pointing down at her corpse. "Th-that's me. Why am I...?" She finally seemed to understand, turning around slowly to stare openly at Death. There was a flicker of an offended, betrayed expression on her face, but it passed as soon as she touched her forehead.

She shook her head. Not his fault.

"...What happened? I was talking to Rion and--"

     IT WAS NOT RION STEINER.

The look had not gone entirely unnoticed. It was not one he was unfamiliar with, and Death could hardly fault the woman for anything that was going through her mind. It was a normal reaction for those who had been killed without realizing it. At the most, perhaps Pepper could have been thankful it had happened so quickly.

Yet, it was a brutal and unnecessary death...

Not Rion...?

"Of course not! He would never do something like that!" Pepper believed this, whole-heartedly, but seemed to lack an understanding of what Death meant.

Her assumption is some mysterious assailant had attacked them both.

"Oh god, Mr. Steiner is all alone in the gallery! He's too weak to--"

Death shook his head, to her misunderstanding and in response to her expressed concerns.

DO NOT WORRY ABOUT THE BOY. HE WILL BE FINE, AND HE IS HARDLY ALONE.

He gestured with a hand.

PERHAPS FOR NOW, WE SHOULD LEAVE THIS PLACE...

It couldn't be very comfortable standing in the same room as your dead body, after all.

It certainly wasn't very comfortable standing in the presence of one's own corpse. Pepper gave a few more distracted glances back to the body as she followed Death. She hesitated, but then realized that he was right.

Again, a misunderstanding, but she assumed that by 'hardly alone' implied those very friends that had saved Rion would soon return. Oh, what a mess they were in for!

"Where are we going? What happens now?"

That misunderstanding was intentional. Besides, her assumption was partially correct. It was just a matter of time, and time was such a relative thing.

FOR NOW? YOU WILL BE ABLE TO RETURN, IN TIME. ALTHOUGH MY WORK IS DONE HERE, I SUPPOSE I COULD INVITE YOU TO MY HOME, UNLESS YOU HAVE SOMEWHERE ELSE YOU FEEL YOU NEED TO BE..?

Death glanced at her inquiringly, awaiting her decision.

Now that's the million dollar question. Where did the dead go in Nautilus, anyway?

"...Your home?"

This stops Pepper in her tracks, her head twitching to the side. "Death has a home." This immediately brought up images of a mausoleum or crypt.

Seriously?!

He canted his head opposite the angle she'd tilted her's.

YES, I AM CERTAIN I HAVE MENTIONED IT BEFORE? WHEN YOU WERE LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO STAY...

Shrugging, he extended his free hand towards her. YOU CAN DECIDE, ONCE WE ARE THERE, he suggested.

Oh yes, he did mention that. Well, that clears up the confusion as to whether or not he was joking.

"Wh-what happens if I don't? I mean, where do dead people go in Nautilus before they... reform or come back to life or... whatever it is that happens--" She looked at his bony hand and realized something terrible.

"...Oh my god, I don't know anything about this. You're the expert, Death."

TRUE, BUT WHEN IT COMES TO THE WORKINGS OF THIS PLACE AND THE DEAD, I AM STILL NOT ENTIRELY SURE WHAT HAPPENS TO THOSE SOULS IN GENERAL. I IMAGINE THEY HANG ABOUT SOMEWHERE UNTIL THEIR RETURN, BUT OTHERWISE, IF ONE ISN'T TERRIBLY FOND OF WAITING AND DOING NOTHING, I SUPPOSE THEY'D NEED SOMEWHERE TO STAY.

He looked at her again.

IF IT HELPS, YOU WOULDN'T BE THE FIRST THAT I'VE PUT UP IN MY HOME FOR A WHILE. I'M TRYING TO HELP MAKE THIS A LITTLE EASIER, BUT I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS WHOLE SITUATION IS ALREADY DIFFICULT.
